Let’s embrace those changes after 60, head on!

Featured 11th-May-2022

In our previous blog, we discussed the changes your body undergoes at your age. Now, let’s get down to how you can tackle these changes, so you can enjoy this beautiful phase like a boss! Like we said before and we’ll say it again – this phase of life is a time of adventure, opportunity, and change!

So, here’s how all you moms out there can make sixty feel like sixteen! All you need to do is follow these simple tips to make your life tiptop!

·       Take small steps to stay active

Don’t think of it as “exercise” or “workout”. Rather, think of it as staying active by doing physical activity you enjoy! It could be just taking a short walk or 10 minutes of yoga in your room. If you can’t do 10 minutes, do 5. It’s not important how long you do it for, as long as you do it regularly.

Make it fun by doing it with a partner or your friends! When you start enjoying it, gradually increase the duration and intensity.

A little physical activity everyday can help you maintain a healthy weight and lower the risk of heart disease. Weight-bearing activities like climbing stairs and walking help you keep your bones strong by slowing down bone loss. It might surprise you but staying active also helps with constipation and keeping memory loss at bay.

Most importantly, you’ll feel happier and more confident!

·       Make small changes towards a healthy diet

Making big diet changes in one go is difficult, and you’ll end up giving up and going back to unhealthy foods very quickly. So, don’t rush. Make small changes – to start with, add a fruit to your day. Fruits like apples, bananas and oranges are high in fibre and keep constipation at bay. After one week, replace one chapatti with a fresh salad of raw veggies like beetroot, cucumber, lettuce, carrots etc. And so on.

Next, cut down slowly on foods that are high on fat and salt. If you eat fatty foods 3 times a week, tell yourself to cut it to 2 times. Replace it with something like beans, tofu or eggs (lean sources of protein) to improve your heart health!

Importantly, at your age, you need lots of calcium and Vitamin D to keep your bones, joints and muscles healthy. Try adding beans, lentils, almonds to your diet and get some early morning sunshine – it helps create Vitamin D in your body.

·       Say goodbye to stress

Stress takes a serious toll on mental and emotional health, and that can cause physical health issues too! If you’re feeling stressed, try and include meditation in your daily routine. It will help calm you down and let go of things that cause stress.

Come to think of it, you’re at that carefree stage of life now! Kids all grown up, nested away. This is the time when you should enjoy yourself and be happy!

·       Sleep well

You’ve had years of sleepless nights spent fretting and worrying. It’s about time you took some well-earned rest. Sleep at least 7-9 hours every night as quality sleep helps heal and repair your heart and blood vessels and helps in tackling stress.

Now that you know what you should include in your daily routine, tell us what changes you made in your life!

Our next blog will take you through the foods you need to avoid. In the meantime, stay safe, stay happy and celebrate what can turn out to be the best phase of your life!
