Though many of the urban youth may be aware of what PCOS is, you’ll be surprised that 1 out of 10 women has it, without even realizing it!

Well, the reasons could vary. Either they choose to just ignore its symptoms, or they don’t have a clue what PCOS is!

So, let’s first get an insight of what PCOS really is:

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is basically a hormonal problem that a woman develops, that leads to female infertility. Women with PCOS produce higher-than-normal amounts of male hormones that cause menstrual imbalances and can create problems during pregnancy.

PCOS can strike at any time without warning and can affect ‘fertile’ woman of all ages. Since its actual cause is still unknown, it also makes it difficult for doctors to diagnose it in the first place. And, as we said before, women with PCOS often ignore its symptoms or mistake its symptoms for something else. Unfortunately, most women realize that they have PCOS when they are unable to conceive.

Let’s now list out the most prominent symptoms of PCOS:

·       The most common symptom is a delayed menstrual cycle

·       Sudden weight gain for no rhyme or reason

·       Oily skin leading to the frequent occurrence of acne

·       Excessive facial or body hair growth

·       Sudden mood swings and depression

Looking at the above, it comes as no surprise that women often ignore or misinterpret the symptoms of PCOS.

Now that we’ve told you a fair bit about PCOS, let’s get down to its diagnosis and treatment:

PCOS can be diagnosed by taking the tests mentioned below:

·       Taking a pelvic exam

·       Taking an ultrasound scan

·       Taking a blood test

The above tests help in analyzing whether you have got PCOS or not, and treatment can be given accordingly.

PCOS can be treated to a great extent by making lifestyle changes:

·       Eat healthy as advised by your doctor

·       Exercise or engage in any physical activity regularly

·       Check your insulin levels regularly to ensure that they are at the right level

Last but not least, probably the most effective way of keeping PCOS in check is spreading awareness of the same! So, keep in mind, whether you are a father, mother, husband, sister, brother, friend, colleague or just an acquaintance of someone, educate them on PCOS, if they don’t know already.

This is by far the best way to keep PCOS at bay!
