What to do if you or your loved one tests positive for the COVID-19?

We hope you’re never faced with this situation but, like we always say – it's always better to be prepared for all situations – both the good and the bad. Here’s a quick guide we’ve put together to help you if unfortunately, you or a loved one test positive for the COVID-19.

So, you or a loved one have recently tested positive after either of the following reasons:

You or your loved one was in direct contact with someone who was COVID positive
You or your loved one showed symptoms of the COVID-19 (fever, cough, fatigue, shortness of breath)
You or your loved one was asymptomatic but were tested as part of a safety protocol

Is hospitalization necessary?

Now, basis your situation you’re probably confused whether hospitalization is required, or can you quarantine at home?

The answer to this mainly depends on what your health condition and symptoms are like, and whether you have other pre-existing diseases or not.

Let’s have a look at some common situations. However, it is recommended that you get an advice from your medical practitioner who will be better fit to advise you on whether you or your loved one needs hospitalization or not. Because everyone is different and so are our bodies.

Standard practices:

Generally, if you are asymptomatic, unnecessary exposure can just be avoided by isolating and getting treated at home. However, please make sure you’re isolated in a separate room to avoid spreading the virus to other members at home.
Many mild cases (where you only have one or two symptoms and you’re mostly well) and those who are younger are advised to stay at home and get treated at home too, with regular medical advice from a medical practitioner, required supplements and medicines and importantly, a healthy diet. Here again, it is important to be isolated in a separate room to avoid spreading it to any other family member.
If you or a loved one’s condition isn’t mild and you have been facing symptoms for many days and are above 45 years, then it is often recommended to get hospitalized for better monitoring and treatment.
If you or a loved one has a pre-existing condition such as diabetes, asthma, hypertension, cardiovascular issues, etc then it is recommended to get hospitalized given the higher risk and professional treatment required.

Note: The above are recommendations basis what’s commonly being practised and shouldn’t be taken as medical advice. If you test positive, it is highly recommended to check with your doctor as per your personal health condition.

Okay, so now that you’ve gone through the above and also spoken to the doctor, what are your next steps?

Let’s take the situation where you or your loved one decide to get hospitalized. In this case, you could use your health insurance covering coronavirus or group medical cover that covers the COVID.

If you don’t have health insurance at all, then you will have to pay for all the treatment costs. However, do keep the following in mind.

A. When you are hospitalized but, have a health insurance that covers treatment for coronavirus:

If you want to opt for cashless claims at a Digit network hospital:

Choose the network hospital. You can find the complete list of network hospitals here.
Make sure you have your positive test report from an authorized government centre.
Display e-health card to the hospital helpdesk and ask for the cashless request form.
If all is good, your claim will be processed as soon as possible!

B. When you are hospitalized but don’t have a valid health insurance policy to cover coronavirus:

If you plan to cover your treatment on your own, here are a few things you should keep in mind (however, you should keep these in mind even if you are covered by your insurer)

Be aware on the limits set on COVID hospitalization charges - Given that we’re in a pandemic, there are certain guidelines and limitations set by the state government on things such as admission charges and treatment expenses.

Based on where you live, check what the limitations and capping is so you’re sure you’re not going to be overcharged.

Check if the hospital charging too much for PPE kits - One of the charges included in coronavirus related treatments are PPE kits.

However, do check how much you are being charged for the same. For example, if there are 10 patients in a ward, hospital staff use the same PPE kits for all patients. In this case, you should only be paying for 1/10th of the total PPE cost.

Common dos and don'ts for when you have tested positive for the COVID-19

1. Don’t believe every forward you receive: Given how widespread the COVID-19 is today, misinformation surrounding it has become just as widespread.

That’s why, always fact-check any information you receive, especially over social media channels like Whatsapp and Facebook.

Things are already stressful with the COVID-19. Misinformation and myths often make us worry over unnecessary things even more and making your mental health worse at this point is not something you want to put yourself through.

Hence, always fact check information and avoid believing everything you see or hear on the COVID-19.

2. Do maintain a healthy diet: Healthy and nutritious food is what helps our body both to improve immunity and fight back infections and diseases.

So whether you have been tested positive, are not positive or have already recovered – stick to nutritious and whole meals which include a range of vitamins and nutrients your body needs.

3. Don’t self-medicate: Yes, we know there’s a lot of information and Dr Google out there prescribing all kinds of cures. However, at such a time it is best to only trust your doctor for your cure!

4. Do get proper rest: This is something recommended for anyone going through any illness. Give your body the time it needs to heal by getting more than 8 hours of sleep every night and even if you’re not sleeping, take rest and give yourself the time you need to heal.
