Insurance Fraud Awareness

A Note for You:

Insurance is a promise to protect your family's future. Sadly, a few people try to misuse that trust. They may call you, message you or even visit you, and they usually sound helpful and friendly. This Fraud awareness page explains, in simple words, the five most common tricks and the easy habits that keep you safe. You do not need any technical knowledge. If something feels rushed or too good to be true, pause and check.

1. Fake Calls

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

Ramesh gets a call: "I am from the insurance head office. You have an unclaimed bonus of Rs.4 lakh. Pay a small processing fee today or you will lose it." Ramesh pays. The bonus never arrives.

WARNING SIGNS WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
Caller says they are from the insurance company, the regulator or a government office  Remember, an insurer/regulator does not offer such services
Talks about an unclaimed bonus, refund or commission you never knew about  If an offer sounds too good to be true, it is not true
Says you are a nominee of someone else's policy, and a big payout is waiting  Hang up. Call back only on the number printed on your policy document
Asks for a "fee", "service charge" or "deposit" to release your money  Remember, an insurer/regulator never charges you for receiving money that is rightfully yours
Rushes you: "Act today or lose it!"  Watch your SMS and email. An OTP you did not ask for is a warning sign
Asks for PAN, Aadhaar, OTP or bank details for "verification"  Do not trust a caller just because they claim to be from the insurer, IRDAI or a government office. Hang up and verify on the official number yourself.

2. Fake Links & Messages

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

Meera receives an SMS: "Your policy will lapse today! Update KYC here." The page looks exactly like the insurer's website. She enters her card number and OTP. Minutes later, money is gone from her account.

WARNING SIGNS WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
SMS, WhatsApp or email about renewal, KYC or bonus with a link to click  Do not click. Type the official website address yourself
Website address looks slightly "off" or has spelling mistakes  Check the address bar carefully before typing any detail
Page asks for card number, CVV, OTP or net-banking password  You never need to enter an OTP or PIN to receive money.
Scary or urgent words: "policy lapsing", "account blocked"  Verify policy or account-related alerts by logging into the official website or app, not through links in messages.
Message comes from an unknown number or a free email ID  Delete the message and confirm with the company on its official number

3. Misuse of Your ID Documents

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

Vikram gave copies of his Aadhaar and PAN to someone offering a loan. Months later, he discovers an insurance policy in his name that he never bought.

WARNING SIGNS WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
Someone asks for ID copies without a clear reason or without showing their own ID  Verify the Agent/POSP's credentials through the insurer's website or customer care helpline before purchasing a policy, and not merely by checking the ID card shown by the agent.
You get a message or premium notice for a policy you never bought  Contact the insurer directly through official channels to confirm the policy details.
Your documents are handed over to a person you cannot verify  Check every form you sign, including auto-debit forms
Forms, including bank auto-debit (NACH) forms, are filled without your knowledge  Review your policies and bank statements regularly; report unknown ones at once

4. Premium Payment Fraud

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

Anita hands Rs. 40,000 in cash to her agent for renewal, with no receipt. A year later she finds her policy has lapsed. The money never reached the company.

WARNING SIGNS WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
Agent asks for cash instead of online payment  Pay online (UPI, net banking, card) or set up auto-debit to Go Digit Life Insurance Ltd. only
No official receipt, or only a handwritten slip  Issue cheques and demand drafts only in favour of Go Digit Life Insurance Limited and write your Proposal/Policy number on the back.
Cheque to be made out to a person, not to the company  Always pay from your own bank account, card or UPI, never through someone else's account.
Asked to pay through someone's personal UPI, card or bank account  Always collect the official premium receipt and match it on the company website or app
Agent collects blank or spare cheques "for next year"  Check your policy status every few months

5. Misleading Sales

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

Suresh is told: "Your old policy is useless. Switch to this new plan with guaranteed high returns." He signs where he is told and shares an OTP. Later he learns the plan has no such guarantee and a long premium term.

WARNING SIGNS WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
Promises of returns that are not shown in the benefit illustration or policy document  Read the brochure and insist on the benefit illustration
Pressure to stop or surrender your old policy and buy a new one  Fill in the proposal form yourself or check every detail. Never sign blank forms
Seller fills in the form for you or asks you to sign blank forms  Give true health and personal details. Hiding facts can get a claim rejected later
Asks for your OTP before you have read and understood the documents  Verify the Agent/POSP through the insurer's official verification channels before sharing OTP.
Does not explain charges, how long you must pay, or lock-in period. Calls the policy a "fixed deposit" or a "savings scheme"  Use your 30-day free-look period, from the date you receive the policy document for first time, to review the Policy document and related documents to identify any gap and connect with us immediately. You are entitled to cancel your policy in this period.

Disclaimer: Names (Ramesh, Meera and others) are used here for illustrative purposes only and do not refer to any real person.

Golden Rules to Remember

  1. Keep your PAN, Aadhaar, bank and card details safe
  2. Share them only after checking who is asking and why
  3. Never share your OTP on a call or message. Enter it yourself, only on our official website or app.
  4. An insurer does not charge nominees or beneficiaries to release money due to them
  5. Verify any offer on the official website or by calling the company on its official number
  6. Verify the agent or POSP on our official website or helpline, not just by the ID card shown
  7. Pay premiums only to the company, and get a receipt
  8. Read your policy document as soon as you receive it

The 3-Step Habit: STOP. THINK. VERIFY.

1

STOP

Do not pay, sign or share anything in a hurry.

2

THINK

Did they contact me first? Does this sound too good?

3

VERIFY

Check on the official website or helpline.

If You Are Targeted: Act Fast

Fraud can happen to even careful people. Do not feel embarrassed and do not wait. The faster you act, the better the chance of protecting your money and your policy. Follow these six steps.

1. Stop

Stop all contact with the person. Do not make any further payment or share any more details.

2. Call your bank

If money was debited or card/OTP shared, call your bank at once to block the card or account and raise a dispute.

3. Save the proof

Keep screenshots, messages, call logs, website links, receipts and cheque copies. Do not delete anything.

4. Tell your insurer

Inform the Company through its official helpline, website or nearest branch, with your policy number and proof. You can also write directly to our Principal Officer for Fraud Management (Anti-Fraud Officer) at fmu.life@godigit.com.

5. Report the fraud

Online or phone fraud: call 1930 or visit https://cybercrime.gov.in

Cash or document fraud: file a police complaint (FIR).

6. Escalate if needed

If your complaint remains unresolved, escalate it to the Insurer's Grievance Officer, then to IRDAI through the Bima Bharosa Portal, and thereafter to the Insurance Ombudsman.

Quick Guide: Genuine or Fraud?

GENUINE FRAUD ALERT
Contact you on the number or email printed on your policy  Calls from unknown numbers claiming to be from "Head Office", the "Regulator", "Bima Lokpal", "IRDAI" or the "Ombudsman"
Gives you time to read and decide  Says "Decide today or lose it!"
Gives an official receipt for every payment  Asks for cash, or a personal account or UPI
Takes premium in the company's name only  Asks for OTP, PAN or Aadhaar over the phone
Releases money you are owed without any fee  Asks for a "processing fee" to release your money
Can be verified on our official website or helpline, and explains charges clearly  Promises returns not shown in the benefit illustration, or pushes you to switch policies

Your 60-Second Fraud Check

Before you pay, sign or share anything, ask yourself:

  1. Did they contact me first, or did I reach out to them?
  2. Am I being rushed to decide right now?
  3. Am I being asked to pay to receive money that is supposedly mine?
  4. Would I be comfortable explaining this to my family?
  5. Can I check this myself on the official website or helpline?

If two or more answers worry you: PAUSE. VERIFY. THEN DECIDE.

Caution: IRDAI does not sell insurance, announce bonuses, invest premiums, or seek payments from policyholders. Before buying a policy, please verify that the insurer is registered with IRDAI.
