How to get COVID-19 Vaccine in India?

Covid-19 has wreaked havoc in the lives of many across the globe. While the first phase of the vaccination drive against this disease led to frontline healthcare workers receiving the shots against Covid-19, the general populace still awaits vaccination.

With the first phase of vaccination coming to a close by February end, the Government is now gearing up for its second phase. Now, senior citizens and non-senior citizens with comorbidities would acquire the vaccine through an effective system.

What system, you ask?

Well, read on to know more about how the Government has planned to proceed with planned vaccination of India’s population.

Who Received the Vaccination First?

The first phase of vaccination involved healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, hospital and nursing home staff members.

Even paramedics were vaccinated during this initial stage. Since healthcare workers face the greatest amount of risk, they deserve to be the first ones with this added layer of protection.

After all of the healthcare workers receive the vaccination, the next phase would introduce this vaccine to defence personnel, state police departments, revenue service employees, municipal workers, home guard and disaster management.

People Aged above 60 years and those with Co-Morbidities

Next in line are the elderly or individuals who are aged above 60 years. Starting March 1 2021, all such senior citizens can seek vaccination from government hospitals and chosen private institutions as well.

Along with such people, the government will also vaccinate people aged between 45 years and 59 years, who suffer from comorbidities.

However, these individuals would need to substantiate that they suffer from comorbidities through a valid certificate issued by a medical practitioner.

Following this, the vaccination procedure will shift to residents of areas where the rate of infection has remained high consistently.

Lastly, when all of the above sections of society have received their shots, the remaining population will acquire the vaccination dosage.

Thus, if you are a healthy 25-year old, living in a place where the transmission rate has been low, do not expect to be vaccinated in the initial wave.

Also, besides this gradual distribution, one would also need to register to get this vaccine shot.

List of Comorbidities Qualifying You for the Vaccine

  • Post cardiac transplant/LVAD
  • Severe or moderate heart valve conditions
  • Heart failure and related hospitalisation within the last year
  • Left ventricular systolic dysfunction, with LVEF lower than 40%
  • Congenital heart conditions with PAH
  • End stage kidney disease
  • Recipients or those on waiting lists for stem cell transplant
  • Hypertension or Angina
  • Diabetes
  • Leukaemia or Lymphoma
  • HIV infection
  • Thalassemia Major
  • Sickle Cell Disease

These are just some of the common comorbidities that make you eligible to receive the shots during this second phase.

Registration Process to Receive Covid-19 Vaccine in India

Individuals must register to receive vaccines in the second phase. The CoWIN platform, launched by the Government of India, allows people to self-register and this registration process began at 9 am March 1.

Alternatively, senior citizens can also register using the Aarogya Setu application.

The application will allocate a particular date, venue and time to applicants, based on which they would need to visit the concerned location for the inoculation. The process of registration involves the following steps:

  • Step 1: In the CoWIN platform, provide your phone number.
  • Step 2: Enter the OTP, which you receive on this number and click on proceed.
  • Step 3: With GPS feature, the platform will detect your location and recommend Covid Vaccination Centres (CVC) in your proximity. Choose the time slot and CVC as per your preference.

Besides online registration through Aarogya Setu or CoWIN, individuals can also opt for offline registration as well.

Doing this involves heading to one of the vaccination centres with the required documents.

Accepted Documents for Vaccine Registration

You can complete the registration process using the following documents:

  • Voter ID/Passport/pension document/driving license/PAN card/Aadhaar card
  • Smart cards related to medical insurance from the Union Ministry of Labour
  • Bank account or post office account passbooks
  • Service ID belonging to Public Limited enterprises/state and Central government agencies
  • Identity cards issued officially to members of parliament, members of the legislative assembly and members of the legislative council.

Understanding the Process for Vaccination

The following are some of the steps that registered applicants will need to follow when visiting a centre for this vaccine:

  • Step 1: Gather at the venue allocated for your inoculation during registration.
  • Step 2: Receive the shot and stay under observation for around half an hour. During this time, you will be observed by a five-member team of medical practitioners.
  • Step 3: Acquire a second dosage of the vaccine after 28-days to complete the schedule.

Where Can You Get Vaccinated?

Vaccination can take place in one of three modes. These are as follows:

  • Outreach Session - In these cases, the vaccine will be provided to registered applicants at locations other than healthcare centres, nursing homes, hospitals. For example, some people will receive their vaccinations through specialised camps in schools, community halls, colleges, etc.
  • Fixed Session - A fixed session involves conducting vaccination procedures at established medical centres, hospitals, nursing homes and more. Such sessions are overseen by medical experts, which is why if you undergo vaccinations through this particular method, you will need to stick to a stringent schedule.
  • Special Mobilised Vaccinations - This option is limited to remote, hard-to-reach areas, occupied by migratory populations. Also, the international border region population will receive inoculation through this mobile process. In such a procedure, doctors will visit the people to deliver the shots to them.
