What is Family Travel Insurance?
Family travel insurance is a plan that covers your entire family under one policy, helping keep everyone safe and financially protected while travelling.
Travelling together is a meaningful bonding experience, and having a single plan ensures that each member is covered throughout the journey. It also removes the hassle of managing multiple policies by including your immediate and extended family members in one place.
Digit offers this convenience by allowing you to insure your spouse, children, parents, siblings, and in-laws under a single policy designed for family travel.
Why Should You Buy Travel Insurance for Your Family?
Your family’s safety is a priority, and travel insurance helps protect your loved ones from unexpected situations during your trip. With international travel insurance, you can cover your entire family under one policy and buy it online quickly and easily.
- Booking Costs: When planning your trip, you first consider the budget with your family. Hotels, flights, parks, and other recreational activities are essential costs that you will incur. In case these bookings bounce or if you suddenly decide to cancel an event or your trip after payment, travel insurance can ensure you get back your expenses in case the amounts paid are non-refundable through a bounced booking cover.
- Flight-Related Issues: Delayed flights, missed connections, and carrier accidents can happen anytime. To be prepared for these unforeseen events, you should consider purchasing travel insurance.
- Personal Belongings Loss: You're traveling with your family, so you have more baggage than your hands can hold! Awareness of your surroundings and personal belongings on your trip is always important. Items like your bags, wallets, phones, passports, etc., are often stolen or misplaced.
If you are confused about what to do if your baggage is delayed or lost, or if you lose your passport, or if your personal belongings get stolen and you need some financial emergency cash, your travel insurance will provide that. - Medical Costs: Even a slight change in weather might not affect you as much as it would your child. In this case, if required, medical treatment abroad can be costly. Travelers spend three to five times more on medical expenses internationally. Travel Insurance with medical covers (like ours) can act as a relief in such cases.
- Travel Scams: Tourist places are prone to scams, and con artists try to make the most of vulnerable tourists. When you visit a new location, you do not always know the ins and outs of the place. Travel Insurance comes into play in such circumstances.

What's not Covered?
While ours is a comprehensive travel insurance that covers most things that could go wrong on vacation, we are completely open in all that we do. Understanding what your travel insurance does not cover is just as critical as knowing what is covered. The following are some exclusions that our travel insurance will not cover:
- Any pre-existing medical conditions, including whether your doctor had advised against travelling, are not covered. Trip abandonment due to such health issues or cancellations because of visa rejection isn’t covered either.
- Death or disability won’t be covered if it happens more than 365 days after the accident that caused it.
- Adventure sports are covered only if done for a single day. Multi-day treks, hikes, or professional-level activities are not included.
- Flight delays are not covered if your airline informed you at least 6 hours in advance. Similarly, luggage delays caused by customs aren’t covered.
- Missed connections aren’t covered if the time between flights was shorter than the minimum required connection time.
- Theft claims are invalid if not reported to local police within 24 hours or if reported only after returning from your trip.
- Trip extensions due to childbirth or related reasons are also not covered.
- Trip abandonments due to pre-existing illnesses or health conditions can’t be covered.
- Trip cancellations due to the rejection of visa are not covered.

How to Choose the Right Travel Insurance Plan for Your Family?
Choosing the right Travel Insurance plan for your family is essential because you need to minimise the expense of risk when you are going abroad with your family. Many travel insurance plans are available in the market offering similar benefits. But a well-informed traveller will take time to understand the ins and outs of their insurance plan investments to get the most out of it.
Some key factors you must look into when buying travel insurance for your trip are:
What is the Difference Between Family vs Individual Travel Insurance?
Choosing between a family and individual travel insurance plan depends on how you’re travelling. If all members are travelling together on the same itinerary, a family plan is usually more convenient and cost-efficient. However, if travel dates or destinations differ, individual plans offer more flexibility.
Here’s a side-by-side comparison to help you decide:
| Factor | Family Travel Insurance | Individual Travel Insurance |
| Who It Covers | Covers multiple family members under one policy | Covers one person per policy |
| Cost | Usually more cost-efficient for groups | Higher total cost if covering multiple people separately |
| Policy Management | One policy, one renewal, one claim journey | Multiple policies to manage for each traveller |
| Flexibility | All members must travel together on the same itinerary | Each traveller can have different travel dates and destinations |
| Coverage Structure | Similar coverage levels for all members | Customised coverage based on individual needs |
| Best For | Families travelling together for vacations, holidays, or multi-country trips | Solo travellers, business travellers, or family members travelling separately |
| Customisation | Limited customisation per individual | High customisation (sum insured, add-ons, coverage) |
| Claims & Assistance | Single point of contact for the entire family | Each member handles claims individually |

How Does Travel Insurance Help Families in Real International Travel Situations?
When families travel together, even a small disruption can affect multiple people at once. These real-world travel situations show how insurance helps families manage both medical and trip-related issues abroad.
Your Child Falls Sick on Day 2 of Your Europe Trip
You land in Paris, and within two days, your child develops a high fever due to weather and food changes. You’re in a new country, unsure where to go, and private hospitals are expensive. Travel insurance helps you access a nearby doctor, covers consultation and treatment costs, and guides you through the process so care isn’t delayed.
Your Connecting Flight Gets Delayed, Leaving Your Family Stranded Overnight
While flying to London, your connecting flight from Dubai is delayed by several hours. With kids and luggage, you’re stuck at the airport late at night. Insurance provides automatic delay compensation, helping cover meals, basic expenses, and short-term inconvenience.
Your Family’s Luggage Doesn’t Arrive at Your Destination
You arrive in Singapore, but none of your checked-in bags show up. Clothes, kids’ essentials, and travel items are all missing. Insurance reimburses essential purchases like clothes, toiletries, and basic items, so your trip continues without disruption.
One Parent Loses Their Passport During the Trip
While sightseeing in Rome, one parent misplaces their passport. The entire itinerary is now at risk, and you’re unsure where to start. Insurance supports you with documentation assistance and related expenses, helping you get a replacement and resume your travel plans faster.
A Senior Family Member Needs Urgent Hospitalisation Abroad
During a family trip to the US, an elderly parent experiences chest discomfort and needs immediate hospital care. Treatment costs are significantly high. Insurance covers hospitalisation and emergency evacuation if required, preventing a major financial burden.
What are the Eligibility Criteria for Travel Insurance Family Plans?
Digit's Travel Insurance covers individuals up to the age of 99 years. When purchasing travel insurance for your family, the members covered by one policy include the insured's immediate family. They are:
| Family Members | |||
| Spouse | Father | Parent-in-law | Grandparent |
| Children | Brother | Daughter-in-law | Grandchild |
| Mother | Sister | Son-in-law | |
