What is Family Travel Insurance?

Family travel insurance is a plan that keeps your whole family safe while travelling.

Going on an adventure with your family is a real bonding experience. To enrich your journey, you can opt for Family Travel Insurance to ensure all members are covered, protected, and financially secure.

If this isn't ideal family trip planning, then what is?

To make this happen, Digit offers a travel insurance plan for your immediate family (spouse, children, mother, father, brother, sister, parent-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, grandparent, and grandchild). This plan provides coverage for each family member under one policy.

why should you buy travel insurance

Why Should You Buy Travel Insurance for Your Family?

Your family's safety is your (and ours) utmost priority. A simple answer to why you should buy Travel Insurance for your family is to protect your loved ones against any uncertainties that might arise while on your trip. Going to a foreign destination to enjoy a beautiful vacation with your family is a unique opportunity. To make the most out of this, you can avail of family travel insurance and protect them with one policy.

Buying Travel Insurance for your family online is affordable and accessible. Within minutes, you can generate your quote and purchase your policy without hassle.

Let's look at some reasons why you should purchase travel insurance for your family:

  • Booking Costs: When planning your trip, you first consider the budget with your family. Hotels, flights, parks, and other recreational activities are essential costs that you will incur. In case these bookings bounce or if you suddenly decide to cancel an event or your trip after payment, travel insurance can ensure you get back your expenses in case the amounts paid are non-refundable through a bounced booking cover.
  • Flight-Related Issues: Delayed flights, missed connections, and carrier accidents can happen anytime. To be prepared for these unforeseen events, you should consider purchasing travel insurance.
  • Personal Belongings Loss: You're traveling with your family, so you have more baggage than your hands can hold! Awareness of your surroundings and personal belongings on your trip is always important. Items like your bags, wallets, phones, passports, etc., are often stolen or misplaced.
If you are confused about what to do if your baggage is delayed or lost, or if you lose your passport, or if your personal belongings get stolen and you need some financial emergency cash, your travel insurance will provide that.
  • Medical Costs: Even a slight change in weather might not affect you as much as it would your child. In this case, if required, medical treatment abroad can be costly. Travelers spend three to five times more on medical expenses internationally. Travel Insurance with medical covers (like ours) can act as a relief in such cases.
  • Travel Scams: Tourist places are prone to scams, and con artists try to make the most of vulnerable tourists. When you visit a new location, you do not always know the ins and outs of the place. Travel Insurance comes into play in such circumstances.

what is not covered

What's not Covered?

While ours is a comprehensive travel insurance that covers most things that could go wrong on vacation, we are completely open in all that we do. Understanding what your travel insurance does not cover is just as critical as knowing what is covered. The following are some exclusions that our travel insurance will not cover:

  • Any pre-existing medical conditions, including whether your doctor had advised against travelling, are not covered. Trip abandonment due to such health issues or cancellations because of visa rejection isn’t covered either.
  • Death or disability won’t be covered if it happens more than 365 days after the accident that caused it.
  • Adventure sports are covered only if done for a single day. Multi-day treks, hikes, or professional-level activities are not included.
  • Flight delays are not covered if your airline informed you at least 6 hours in advance. Similarly, luggage delays caused by customs aren’t covered.
  • Missed connections aren’t covered if the time between flights was shorter than the minimum required connection time.
  • Theft claims are invalid if not reported to local police within 24 hours or if reported only after returning from your trip.
  • Trip extensions due to childbirth or related reasons are also not covered.
  • Trip abandonments due to pre-existing illnesses or health conditions can’t be covered.
  • Trip cancellations due to the rejection of visa are not covered.

advantages of travel insurance

Advantages of Getting Family Travel Insurance

Family travel insurance provides many benefits at a low cost. If planning a trip with your family, consider getting travel insurance to make your journey worry-free. Here are some advantages of family travel insurance:

  • Comprehensive Coverage: Family travel insurance helps with many problems, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, luggage delaypassport loss and flight delays. It keeps your family safe from unexpected issues.
  • Cost Savings: It’s often cheaper to buy one policy for the whole family than separate ones for each person. Some plans even cover kids for free if they travel with their parents.
  • Medical Emergencies: If someone in your family gets sick or hurt during the trip, the insurance can pay for medical costs, including hospital stays and emergency evacuations. This is very important when traveling abroad, where healthcare can be expensive.
  • Trip Cancellation and Interruption: If you need to cancel or cut short your trip due to unexpected events like illness or natural disasters, the insurance can refund your non-refundable expenses.
  • Lost or Delayed Luggage: The insurance can pay you back for lost, stolen, or delayed luggage, so you have what you need while waiting for your bags.
  • 24/7 Assistance: Many plans offer 24/7 help for emergencies, travel advice, rebooking flights, and finding medical care.
  • Peace of Mind: Knowing you have protection lets you enjoy your journey without worrying about what might go wrong.

How to Choose the Right Travel Insurance Plan for Your Family?

Choosing the right Travel Insurance plan for your family is essential because you need to minimise the expense of risk when you are going abroad with your family. Many travel insurance plans are available in the market offering similar benefits. But a well-informed traveller will take time to understand the ins and outs of their insurance plan investments to get the most out of it.

Some key factors you must look into when buying travel insurance for your trip are:

Adequate Coverages

When looking for a suitable travel insurance policy, ensure that the coverages offered by your insurance provider cater to your needs. E.g., If you or your family members are sports junkies, then get a plan with adventure sports coverage. Or, if you are a large group and your baggage is getting out of hand (pun intended), then a cover for loss, misplaced, or delayed baggage will prove beneficial.

Know Your Exlusions

There are situations where your travel insurance cannot provide financial aid if you file a claim. To know how to avoid travel insurance claim rejection, you must be educated about your policy's exclusions. For e.g., Pre-existing diseases might not be covered by most insurance providers, trip cancellations due to rejection of visa are not covered, acts of war are not covered, etc.

Compare Premiums and Sum Insured

When looking at various plans online or through an agent, you must compare travel insurance plans for the amount you are investing basis the coverages you can avail. Ensure that you get adequate benefits for the price you pay.

Trip Duration

The number of days you travel affects the cost of your insurance. For eg, if you travel for 15 days, compare different policies to find the one with the lowest premium.

Type of Travel

The kind of trip you’re taking also impacts the premium. Whether it’s a business trip, vacation, or adventure travel, look for policies that suit your specific type of trip.

Destination

Where you’re travelling to matters, too. Different places have different insurance rates. Compare policies based on your travel destination to find the best deal

Tips to Enjoy a Safe Family Vacation

Taking a family vacation is a beautiful and wholesome experience to share with your loved ones. We have curated an international travel guide checklist just for you so you do not miss out on anything before you take off.

  • Know Your Location: When travelling to a new destination with your family, you must be aware of the destination you are travelling to. Make sure that the destination wants you there as well. Always abide by governmental laws and respect the country's culture and traditions. Spend enough time researching that place to ensure you stay out of maximum risk.
  • Choose Safe Accommodations: Booking a hotel or room to stay in must be done with precaution. Make sure that the place you are going to is well-reviewed, accessible, and safe for your family. Book your tickets well in advance to avoid bounced bookings, delays, or hassle. Contact the hotel to inquire about security measures and nearby places.
  • Backup Important Documents: Always ensure that you have your identification details on you. Carry copies of passports, tickets, and IDs if you are asked to provide proof. Please keep your original documents safe to avoid theft or misplacing them at the last moment.
  • Do Not Forget Your Essentials: Phone chargers, batteries, first aid kits, water, and other essentials you know you will require must be in your person. You would not want to get lost in a new location, so ensure your smartphones have enough battery charge and you are also in contact with other family members.
  • Get Travel Insurance for Family: Lastly, buy your family travel insurance plan and carefully review your document. When visiting certain countries, it is mandatory to have valid travel insurance. So, owning family travel insurance is essential and beneficial in sudden emergencies.

Conclusion

When choosing the best insurance for your family, consider the exclusions (what’s not covered), the claim settlement ratio (how often claims are paid), the claim processing time (how quickly claims are handled), the coverages offered (what’s included in the policy), and the premium price (cost of the policy).

Family travel insurance is like a safety net for your trips. It protects you and your loved ones from unexpected problems, such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or lost luggage. This way, you can enjoy your travels with peace of mind, knowing you’re covered if something goes wrong.
