How to Get Legal Heir Certificate in Assam?

A legal heir certificate gives the rightful heir the authority to claim a deceased person's assets and property. A legal heir is the successive person with legal rights on the deceased's property.

Let us look at two ways to apply for a legal heir certificate in Assam: Offline and Online.

1. Offline Process

• Step 1: Visit the nearby office of the Deputy Commissioner or SDO or Circle Officer.
• Step 2: Approach the concerned authority and take the application form. 
• Step 3: Fill out the form with all the necessary details. 
• Step 4: Affix the photograph and submit the application form. 
• Step 5: Collect the acknowledgement slip to track your application. 

2. Online Process

• Step 1: Applicant should register himself and open an account on the official website of e-district Assam. 
• Step 2: After registering, log in to your account from the home page of the e-district assam. 
• Step 3: After logging in, your screen will show you an e-Form search page where you will find the “Legal Heir Certificate” in the drop-down list. 
• Step 4: Click on it and fill it in with the relevant details.  
• Step 5: Upload the necessary documents. 
• Step 6: Submit the application. 

Note: Akshaya Centres only apply to the state of Kerala and not Assam.

The following documents are required to apply for a legal heir certificate in Assam: 

• Photo and Signature of the applicant.
• Residential Proof of the legal heir. 
• Death Certificate of the deceased.
• Identity proof of the applicant. 
• Court Affidavit.
• Receipt of land revenue. 

The Assam government does not charge any money to apply for a legal heir certificate.

The applicants can avail of their legal heir certificate through the following means: 

• Step 1: Open e-district Assam and look for “Track Application”. 
• Step 2: Click on it, fill in your application ID, and submit. 
• Step 3: The download link will pop up in front of you, and you can download your legal heir certificate from there. 

A legal heir document is a crucial document required to get through governmental procedures and claim certain properties of the deceased. Even though blood relations come under legal heirs, there are certain priorities, and only they can apply for this certificate. After verification, the certificate will be issued to you within 30 days.
