It is often said that kitchens are the heart and soul of any house. Therefore, according to Vastu, ensuring that your kitchen is situated in the right direction of your house to create a harmonious living space is important.

Vastu suggests placing the kitchen in the southeast direction of your home, where the Lord of fire, Agni, is believed to prevail. However, if this is not feasible, the north-west direction can be considered as an alternative option.

1. North-facing Kitchen

According to Vastu, the north direction is associated with wealth. Having a kitchen in the north can lead to uncontrolled expenses. Hence, Vastu does not recommend placing the kitchen in this direction.

• Colour: To promote a sense of freshness, consider using soothing colours like blue, green, and grey for the kitchen walls. Avoid colours like Orange, Yellow, Red, and Pink.
  
• Stove Placement: According to Vastu, the stove should be placed in the southeast corner of the north kitchen to balance the fire element. 
  
• Sink Placement: Place the sink in the northeast or east direction of the kitchen for better energy flow.
  
• Cooking Direction: For a more harmonious cooking experience, facing the east direction while cooking is suggested.

2. South-facing Kitchen

According to Vastu, it is recommended to avoid facing south-facing kitchens, as this may lead to financial woes.

• Colour: When choosing colours for the kitchen walls, consider using soothing colours such as orange, red, beige, yellow, and green. Avoid colours like Black, Grey, Blue and Silver.
  
• Stove Placement: According to Vastu, the stove should be placed in the southeast corner, as the fire element is linked to this direction.
  
• Sink Placement: It is suggested that the sink be placed in the northeast or east direction of the kitchen. 
  
• Cooking Direction: Vastu Shastra advises to face the east direction while cooking.

3. East-facing Kitchen

According to Vastu Shastra, the east direction is not considered the best for kitchen placement, but there are remedies to counter the negative effects.

• Colour: Beige, green, and orange will work best for an east-facing kitchen. Vastu suggests avoiding grey, white, yellow, golden, and silver. 
  
• Stove Placement: Place the stove in the southeast corner of an east-facing kitchen. 
  
• Sink Placement: Vastu recommends placing the sink in the southeast or east direction of an east-facing kitchen.

4. West-facing Kitchen

According to Vastu Shastra, placing your kitchen in the west is considered neutral. We can do specific things to enhance the value of a west-facing kitchen.

• Colour: For a west-facing kitchen, choose colours like silver, grey, white, and golden. Do not opt for red, green, or orange. 
  
• Stove Placement: According to Vastu, the stove should be placed in the southeast corner of the kitchen. 
  
• Sink Placement: According to Vastu principles, the sink should be placed northeast or east.
  
• Cooking Direction: For a west-facing kitchen, facing the east direction is recommended while cooking.

5. Northeast-facing Kitchen

The northeast is not a favourable position for a kitchen as it may lead to increased financial expenditures, family growth, and health problems for the women in the house. The northeast is considered sacred, so keeping the northeast angle clean and clutter-free is recommended.

• Colour: According to Vastu, yellow is ideal for a northeast-facing kitchen. 
  
• Stove Placement: The southeast corner of the kitchen is considered the best for the stove placement.

6. Southeast-facing Kitchen

• Colour: Red and orange colours are preferred for painting walls in the southeast kitchen.

7. Northwest-facing Kitchen

According to Vastu Shastra, the northwest direction is well suited for positive energy flow. Certain Vastu doshas can also exist in the northwest, but they can be effectively addressed through specific practices.

• Colour: For a west-facing kitchen, choose colours like silver, grey, white, and golden. Do not opt for red, green, or orange.

8. Southwest-facing Kitchen

• Stove Placement: The southeast corner of the kitchen is the best place to position your stove, according to Vastu.

• East: A kitchen in the east direction receives ample sunlight and air throughout the day. This helps maintain continuous positive energy flow.
  
• West: This direction is considered a neutral placement for your kitchen, according to Vastu Shastra. 
  
• Northeast: Although it is recommended that kitchens be avoided in the northeast direction, they will receive sunlight until the later hours.

• Vastu suggests placing electronic appliances like refrigerators in the southwest corner. It is best to avoid placing it in the northeast corner.

• Black marble or stone should be used for the kitchen slab instead of granite to promote positive energy flow in the kitchen.
  
• Install the kitchen door so it opens in a clockwise direction.
  
• Place windows on the eastern or southern side of the kitchen to allow natural light and fresh air to fill up your kitchen.
  

Don'ts for a Kitchen, as per Vastu

• Avoid combining the kitchen and bathroom, which is considered a Vastu defect.
  
• It is best not to construct your kitchen in the north, northeast, or southwest directions, as these are not deemed suitable according to Vastu principles.
  
• Avoid painting your kitchen walls with dark colours, contributing to a gloomy atmosphere.
  
• Avoid situating the sink parallel to the stove. It is believed that the elements of fire and water should not be placed together. 
  
• Avoid installing two doors that open opposite each other. It is best to have a single entrance for the kitchen.
