Monoshock suspension or monocross suspension is an over-damper, single-spring rear suspension. The swingarm side mount on this suspension is near the pivot axis. On bikes, monoshock suspensions are installed between the rear swingarm and chassis. 

Being posited at the machine’s core, it works with gravity elevating the mass concentration. It is also defined as a ‘flying suspension’ by certain manufacturers as it skillfully balances the bike during jumps and landings. 

Installed right beneath the rider’s seat, the functioning pattern of a single-shock suspension completely differs from other conventional suspensions. A monoshock suspension requires three aspects for a seamless performance. These elements are as follows: 

• A large spring to absorb bumps and shocks 

• A process to dampen the spring motion 

• An extensive motion range to launch the first two elements 

To tick all boxes, a monocross suspension has been implied at the centre connecting the chassis and rear swing arm. The other end of the rear-swing arm is attached to the rear wheel to function accordingly. 

Thus, during motion, when the rear wheel goes up, the monoshock absorber collapses, and similarly, when the wheel goes down, it expands. This persistent motion of the shock absorber results in a longer stroke allowing the rear wheel to cover more distance. 

If your bike hits a pothole, the deflection of the rear swing arm will result in an upward stroke. However, the suspension, posited before the rear axle, will not receive any impact of the stroke. 

This significantly enhances the lifespan of the suspension. Conversely, it also heightens the suspension’s oil expectancy making it more responsive even after years of intense riding.
