How to Perform Jala Neti & Precautions to Take

how to do jala neti and its benefits

Jala Neti is an Ayurvedic technique that improves breathing and relieves any underlying diseases that block one’s respiratory tract. Just like we brush our teeth to maintain dental hygiene and mouth health, Jala Neti helps manage one's nasal health and hygiene.

Jala Neti is one of the six purification methods stated in Hatha Yoga Pradeepika. It has many benefits for users. This blog will cover this Ayurvedic technique's benefits, processes, and side effects.

    What is Jala Neti?

Jala Neti is a traditional yogic practice designed to cleanse and purify the nasal passages and sinuses. It involves using a neti pot filled with a saline solution to rinse the nasal cavities, helping to clear mucus, allergens, and pollutants.

Yogic and uncomplicated Nasal Irrigation techniques are associated with the history of Ayurveda. Practitioners use nasal irrigation to manage respiratory difficulties and optimise brain and general well-being.

Certain benefits are associated with the practice, and like many others, Jala Neti is most often performed as a ritual during the day or with other yoga practices to keep the nasal cavities healthy and prevent sinus diseases. When practised correctly and with relevant caution, it is usually safe.

4 Types of Jala Neti Kriya

Jala Neti Kriya is a yogic practice used to cleanse and purify the nasal passages. There are several variations of Jala Neti, each serving specific purposes and offering unique benefits.

    1. Neti Pot Jala Neti

neti pot jala neti and its benefits

The Neti Pot is a traditional device resembling a small teapot used to pour a saline solution through the nasal passages. It helps clear mucus and allergens from the nasal cavity. The technique involves tilting the head.

    Benefits:

    • Cleanses nasal passages of dust, allergens, and mucus.
    • Reduces symptoms of sinusitis and allergies.
    • Helps prevent respiratory infections by flushing out pathogens.
    • Improves overall nasal hygiene and breathing.
    • Can enhance the sense of smell and taste.\

    How to Perform:

    • Step 1: Fill the Neti Pot with a lukewarm, sterile saline solution.
    • Step 2: Lean over a sink, tilt your head to one side, and insert the spout into the upper nostril.
    • Step 3: Gently pour the solution, allowing it to flow through the nasal passages and exit through the lower nostril.
    • Step 4: Repeat on the other side and clean the Neti Pot thoroughly after use.

    2. Syringe Jala Neti

syringe jala neti and its benefits

A nasal syringe is a bulb-shaped device used to squeeze saline solution into the nasal passages. This method provides a controlled flow of the solution, which can be helpful for those who find the Neti Pot difficult to use. It effectively clears out nasal congestion and irritants.

    Benefits:

    • Provides a more controlled flow of saline solution.
    • Helps clear nasal congestion and reduce mucus buildup.
    • Can be easier to handle for some users compared to a Neti Pot.
    • Effective for individuals with more severe nasal blockages.
    • Aids in preventing sinus infections and alleviating allergy symptoms.

    How to Perform:

    • Step 1: Fill the nasal syringe with a lukewarm, sterile saline solution.
    • Step 2: Lean over the sink, tilt your head slightly forward, and gently insert the syringe into one nostril.
    • Step 3: Squeeze the syringe to release the solution, allowing it to flush through the nasal passages.
    • Step 4: Repeat on the other side and clean the syringe thoroughly after use.

    3. Nasal Irrigator Jala Neti

nasal irrigator jala neti and its benefits

A nasal irrigator is a device designed to deliver a continuous stream of saline solution into the nasal passages. It is often battery-operated or manually pumped to create a steady flow. This method is suitable for those who prefer a more modern approach to nasal irrigation.

    Benefits:

    • Provides a continuous, gentle flow of saline solution.
    • Can be more convenient and less messy than traditional methods.
    • Helps in clearing nasal congestion and improving sinus health.
    • Can be adjusted for flow rate according to personal comfort.
    • Effective for maintaining daily nasal hygiene.

    How to Perform:

    • Step 1: Prepare the saline solution according to the manufacturer’s instructions and fill the irrigator.
    • Step 2: Lean over a sink, tilt your head to one side, and insert the nozzle into one nostril.
    • Step 3: Activate the irrigator to start the flow of the solution, allowing it to cleanse the nasal passages and exit through the other nostril.

    4. Dropper Jala Neti

dropper jala neti and its benefits

A dropper can be used to administer saline solution directly into the nasal passages drop by drop. This method is less common but effective for those needing a mild and controlled nasal wash.

    Benefits:

    • Allows precise control over the amount of saline solution used.
    • Useful for mild nasal cleansing and maintenance.
    • Can be more comfortable for individuals with sensitive nasal passages.
    • Helps in alleviating minor nasal congestion and dryness.
    • Convenient and easy to use with minimal equipment.

    How to Perform:

    • Step 1: Prepare the saline solution and fill the dropper with it.
    • Step 2: Lean over the sink and tilt your head slightly backward.
    • Step 3: Place a few drops of the solution into each nostril, allowing it to sit for a moment.
    • Step 4: Blow your nose gently to expel the solution along with any mucus, and clean the dropper thoroughly after use.

What are the Required Tools to Do Jala Neti?

The tools and ingredients you require to perform Jala Neti are:

    • Jala Neti pot
    • Lukewarm water
    • Pinch of salt

Moreover, a Jala Neti pot is a small instrument that is usually small in size and has a long spout on one side. To make the treatment effective, you will need to have a proper Jala Neti pot.

Make sure the spout is narrow so you can comfortably insert it into your nose. You also need to ensure that the water is the same temperature as your body or just slightly warm.

Remember you need to mix one teaspoon of salt with 500 ml of water and properly mix them. If you feel a burning sensation while practising the Jala Neti procedure, you have to add salt in more proportions.

What are the Steps of Jala Neti?

Performing Jala Neti involves a step-by-step procedure. The steps to perform the Jala Neti procedure are:

    1. First Stage - Washing Your Nostrils

Step 1: First, fill the Jala Neti pot with salt water.

Step 2: Stand straight with your legs apart.

Step 3: You need to lean forward from the back and close your eyes.

Step 4: Now, tilt your head to one side and slightly raise your chin while moving the head back.

Step 5: Breathe through your mouth and insert the pot inside your nostril.

Step 6: The head should be placed so the water can travel from one nostril to another.

Step 7: Continue pouring water till the water on the pot finishes.

Step 8: Now, sit straight or adjust your body so the salt water can flow from your nostrils.

Step 9: You can blow your nose gently if you feel the need to do so to remove any excess mucus.

Step 10: Repeat this same process with your other nostril.

    2. Second Stage - Drying Your Nostrils

Step 1: You must stand straight, close the right nostril with your right thumb, and breathe through the left nostril 5 – 10 times quickly. Once over, repeat the same process with the other nostril.

Step 2: You need to bend horizontally from your back, close your right nostril, and tilt your head to the right. Then, you need to breathe in and out through your left nostril 5-10 times. Repeat the same process with the other nostril.

Step 3: You must stand straight with your feet apart and close your right nostril. While doing so, you must also breathe out forcefully while bending forward from your waist. After completing this, you must return to your normal position while breathing normally. You must do this 5-10 times and repeat the same for the left nostril.

Precautions to Take While Doing Jala Neti

There are limitations to the greatest benefits of Jala Neti, which have to be put in place for it to be practised with great benefits. Following is a list of some such considerations:

    Precautions Description
Use Sterile Water Boiling or filtering is also not an option since plain tap water might have more germs than the neti pot. Most conditions begin with sinusitis, which drenches the wind of pathogenic germs through utility water such as tap water. These activities should be avoided.
Maintain Proper Temperature The water used in the Jala Neti process should be warm, which is acceptable. Push the limits with the use of water which is very hot or extremely cold to the nostrils and increases chances of reducing or damaging most surfaces of the nose area.
Clean Equipment Thoroughly Remember to clean it after each usage with either an automatic washing machine or hand, for example, using a neti pot or nasal irrigator using soap detergent and hot water. This prevents the neti pot or tools from containing bacteria and fungus tree rings.
Use the Correct Saline Solution The saline solution preparation you will do will be the proper salt and water mixture. Therefore, he insists that the salt must be sufficiently applied to avoid unacceptable situations that are likely to arise in any handle. You are also supposed to add saline into a quantity of 1 tsp of salt for every glass.

What is the Best Time to Do the Jala Neti?

The best time to do Jala Neti is early morning, before any intake of food or liquids. This is done by biological practices, which ensure that the airways are unclogged for the day’s activities.

It may also be performed before or following any yoga class to improve respiratory efficiency and gain better results out of practice. Do not do Jala Neti relatively too near bedtime since it may cause a dry nose, affecting one’s sleep.

What are the Side Effects of Jala Neti?

There is no doubt that Jala Neti has innumerable benefits. However, any good thing can have specific side effects. So, the side effects of Jala Neti are:

    • Itching and a burning sensation in the nasal passage are common side effects of Jala Neti.
    • This practice might cause nosebleeds for some.
    • A person using the same Neti pot for a long time can cause certain detrimental health conditions, like an infection of one’s sinus lining.
    • While performing this procedure, if the pot is too hot or the salt is too much in the water, it can cause harm to the sensitive nasal tissues.
    • Suppose a person accidentally ingests the nasal water while performing this procedure. In that case, all the bacteria in the nasal passage can enter the body of a person and can cause fungal infections.

Due to all the above-mentioned side effects, it is always suggested that people perform this procedure in front of a yoga instructor or expert if they are doing this for the first time.

However, the number of benefits of this procedure outdoes its side effects. One needs to consult an Ayurvedic doctor before performing Jala Neti. Moreover, beginners should perform this only under expert supervision.

People in the West opt for nasal irrigation, where they use hydro pumps and plastic nasal tubes, and without the help of gravity, the same results are met. However, Jala Neti will give you the same effects for almost free. Also, the benefits of Jala Neti outweigh the nasal irrigations offered in most Western spas.
