1. Hamad International Airport (DOH), Doha

Holding second place in Skytrax’s annual ranking of the world’s best airports, this luxurious airport opened in 2014. It is about 15 kms from Doha. It is an architectural marvel. It comprises more than 100 buildings within its premises, 1628 lighting poles and surpasses 50 million passengers annually.

However, the second phase of the expansion of the Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar, started in January 2023.

• Terminals: There is a 600000 sq. metre terminal with the following five concourses, including:
  • Concourse A: Located to the west of the check-in section and the main terminal, it comprises ten passenger gates connected to jet bridges. Among these, two gates are constructed to facilitate the Airbus A380.
  • Concourse B: Located to the east of the check-in section and the main terminal, it comprises ten passenger gates connected with the jet bridges. You can find world-class facilities such as a family lounge, a smoking area, and express duty-free stores.
  • Concourse C: It comprises ten passenger gates connected with the jet bridges among which two are designed for Airbus A380. Besides, it includes ten more remote gates which are not connected to the jet bridge.
  • Concourse D and E: Both these concourses consist of the same number of gates among which 1-4 are on the first floor and 18 to 24 on the ground floor. However, gates 2 and 4 are permanently non-operational.

2. Doha International Airport (DIA), Doha

Although now a non-functional airport in Qatar, it served as a commercial International airport until Hamad International Airport was opened in 2014. Here are a few more details:

• It was functional till December 30th to serve the busy air traffic due to the FIFA World Cup 2022.
• The airport was primarily used by VIPs, the Qatari Royal Family and the air force.
• It can serve more than 2000 departing passengers per hour.

3. Al Khor International Airport, Al Khor

Al Khor International Airport serves as a command, logistics and basing hub. Here are a few more details:

• The runway has an asphalt surface of 5249 ft.
• It oversees the air operations of the USA in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq.
• The airport is primarily used by General aviation aircraft and is the venue of the Annual Al Khor Fly-in from 2008.

4. Al Udeid Air Base, Doha

Owned by the Qatar Emiri Air Force, this military base is in the west of Doha. Here are some other details:

• It is the headquarters of United States Central Command (USCC) and United States Air Force Central Command (USAFCC).
• This air base is also home to the No. 83 Expeditionary Air Group RAF and the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing of the USAF.
• During the Afghanistan war, this was a station for 4000 American soldiers.

Given that there is only one operational airport currently on the list of airports in Qatar, the Hamad International Airport will undergo expansion to accommodate heavy traffic footfall conveniently.
