A passport contains several key details, including your name and address. Therefore, if you have recently relocated but your passport indicates the old address, you must update it. Similarly, if your name is misspelt in the passport, it also requires an update at the earliest.

So, this article elaborates on the process of changing your name in the passport. In addition, it guides you on how to change address in passport.

How to Change Name on Passport?

An individual who wants to rectify the misspelt name or change their surname in the passport needs to apply for a reissue. Here are the steps to fill and submit the form for reissue of passport online-

  1. Visit the official website of Passport Seva and click on the ‘Register Now’ option.
  2. Log in with your registered ID and select the ‘Apply for Fresh Passport/Reissue of Passport’ option.
  3. Fill in the application form with relevant details. 
  4. Click on the link displayed on your screen to pay and schedule an appointment. Moreover, you need to pay a specified amount to schedule an appointment at your nearest Regional Passport Office (RPO) or Passport Seva Kendra (PSK).
  5. Now, select ‘Print Application Receipt’ to get a challan, which contains your application reference number or ARN. After a successful application, visit the nearest passport office with original documents for verification on the allocated date.

Alternatively, you can download an e-form and fill it. Thereafter, click on ‘Validate’ and save the file.  Then, simply follow the above-mentioned steps and upload this XML file to book an appointment with the passport office.

What Are the Documents Required to Change Name in Passport?

Here is a list of documents needed for this purpose:

  • Marriage certificate (original and a photocopy)
  • Self-attested photocopy of your spouse's passport
  • Proof of current address
  • Old passport with self-attested photocopy of its first and last two pages. It should also include the ECR/Non-ECR page.
  • The old passport should contain a validity extension page and the observation page, if any.

Note: A divorcee needs to submit a court-certified copy of the divorce decree or copy of the divorce certificate (self-attested) to change the surname in his/her passport.

How to Change Address on Passport?

The steps to change the address online are as follows-

  1. Visit the official website of Passport Seva. Here, registered users can log in to their accounts with their ID and password, while new users must create a new account.
  2. After logging in to your account, select the nearest passport office. At this point, the portal requires you to enter some details, such as your name and date of birth.
  3. Then, you will receive an activation link on your registered email account. Click on this link, then select ‘Apply for Fresh Passport/Reissue of Passport’.

As discussed earlier, an individual needs to set an appointment with the nearest passport office. A pdf application form must be filled up and submitted with the details of the updated address. Note that this form can also be downloaded and filled up offline. Once done, it can be uploaded on the same page from where it was downloaded.

What Are the Documents Required to Change Address in Passport?

Given below is a list of documents for address change in one’s passport:

  • Original passport
  • Copy of your online application
  • Copy of challan or payment receipt
  • Proof of current address, such as Aadhaar card, electricity bill, water bill, voter ID card, etc.
  • Copy of the page of observation made by the passport issuing authority (self-attested)
  • Passport of the spouse (an applicant’s current address should be the same as the address in the spouse’s passport)

How Much Does It Cost to Change Name and Address on Passport?

If there is a change in personal particulars including name and address, one has to apply for re-issuance of the existing passport.

The application fee for a reissue of passport (including an additional booklet due to exhaustion of visa pages) with 10 years validity is ₹2000 (for 60 pages) and ₹1500 (for 36 pages).  In the case of tatkal services, an individual has to pay ₹2000 additionally.

Furthermore, for minors, re-issuance of passport of 5 years validity is ₹1000 (for 36 pages) as application fee and ₹2000 as an additional tatkal fee.
