The transportation of goods worth over ₹50000, whether in interstate or intrastate movement, necessitates the requirement of an e-way bill. An e-way bill validity is crucial as it guarantees that these goods are delivered within a specified timeframe. The period of an e-way bill is set measuring the distance that transported goods cover.
How to Determine the Validity of an E-Way Bill?
The validity of an E-Way Bill depends on the distance between the source and destination of the goods. Moreover, this distance is calculated through the map feature this e-way bill system incorporates. The table below provides rules for determining the validity period of different types of vehicles.
For example, if the distance between a source and destination is 300 km, the E-Way Bill validity time for normal cargo would be 2 days according to updated CBIC rules, as it’s 1 day for the first 200 km and 1 day for the next 100 km.
How Can You Extend the Validity Period of an E-Way Bill?
You can extend the E-Way Bill validity in the following ways if it expires before the vehicle reaches its destination:
- Extension by Commissioner: As per recommendations by the Council, a Commissioner can postpone the validity period of this bill for different goods categories.
- Extension by Transporter: Under certain circumstances, a transporter can extend its validity period after updating the required details in the e-way bill system.
There are various reasons for extending this bill's validity like vehicle accidents, unexpected vehicle breakdowns, natural calamities, or other reasons. Additionally, it is possible to extend the validity of an e-way bill within 8 hours before or 8 hours after its expiry, and the total validity including extensions cannot exceed 360 days from the original generation date.
What are the Steps Involved to Extend the Validity of E-Way Bills?
In certain cases, a transporter may not be able to deliver goods within the validity period of an e-way bill. Hence, during such situations, it is possible to extend the validity period of this Bill. Here are the steps to extend an E-Waybill validity period:
Step 1: Visit the official E-Way Bill portal.
Step 2: Log in to your E-Way Bill account by providing the required details.
Step 3: After logging in, on the left menu bar, under E-Way Bill, select “Extend Validity”.
Step 4: To proceed, enter your e-way bill number that requires an extension and then select "Go".
Step 5: After that, click on “Yes” to extend the e-way bill validity.
Step 6: A screen will appear where you have to provide valid reasons for extending its validity and details of your vehicle.
Step 7: Click on “Submit” after filling out the details.
Once you complete the above procedure, you will get a new e-way bill identification number.
