Difference Between BH Registration and Normal Registration
Navigating the intricacies of road tax and vehicle registration can be challenging, particularly for those who often relocate between states. To make this process more convenient, the Government of India introduced the Bharat Series (BH) number plates in 2021, designed to ease the burden of re-registration for individuals who move frequently.
However, a BH registration is significantly different from the normal registration in terms of cost, convenience, taxation, documentation, and flexibility. Thus, it is essential to clearly differentiate between BH registration and normal registration, helping you make an informed choice for your vehicle.
What is Normal Vehicle Registration?
Registering a vehicle in India is a mandatory legal process under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, confirming ownership and allowing road use. For private vehicles, road tax validity lasts 15 years, while commercial vehicles pay it quarterly or annually based on state rules.
Upon expiry, renewal is essential, and ownership transfer is required during a sale. Electric vehicles carry green plates, white for private and yellow for commercial use, along with applicable registration fees and state-specific charges.
What is a BH Number Registration?
Under the Motor Vehicles Act, vehicle owners can use their vehicles in another state for up to 12 months without re-registration. Beyond this, transferring registration is mandatory to avoid fines and legal action.
To simplify interstate movement, MoRTH launched the Bharat (BH) series plates in 2021. These allow seamless relocation across India, with fees based on the vehicle’s ex-showroom price, paid in two-year blocks. The facility covers government, defence, and eligible private-sector employees.
The BH plate follows the format YY BH #### XX, where YY represents the year of registration, BH stands for Bharat, #### is a unique numeric code, and XX represents random letters.

Which One is Right for You BH or Normal Registration?
If you’re someone who relocates often, the BH Series registration is clearly the more practical and cost-efficient option. It offers convenience, flexibility, and consistency across states. However, for those settled permanently in one location, normal registration may still suffice.
Before deciding, weigh your priorities, cost, convenience, and compliance to determine which registration type best suits your lifestyle.
