BH Number Plate in Telangana: Eligibility & How to Apply

For vehicle owners in Telangana, relocating often means dealing with the hassle of re-registration—long queues at RTOs, hefty one-time road tax payments, and repeated paperwork every time you shift states. This is especially challenging for IT professionals, corporate employees, defence personnel, and government staff whose jobs demand frequent transfers.

In such a scenario, getting a BH registration in Telangana for your vehicle is necessary to avoid the hassles of re-registration. The MoRTH (Ministry of Road Transport and Highways) have introduced the BH series number plate  in September 2021 for a single nationwide vehicle registration. So, if you need to relocate, you no longer have to face vehicle re-registration.

The Telangana High Court has confirmed that private-sector employees in the state are also eligible for BH number plates, removing the earlier restriction that mainly allowed only government employees to apply.

However, the company or organisation must operate in more than four states in India.

Here are the steps to follow when applying for a BH number plate in Telangana:

• Step 1: Visit your state’s transport department website or the MoRTH Vahan Portal.
• Step 2: Log in by entering your credentials.
• Step 3: Enter details like vehicle type, engine number, and chassis number.
• Step 4: Upload required documents such as ID proof, address proof, and insurance.
• Step 5: Pay the prescribed registration fees online.

Here are the steps to apply for a BH number plate in Telangana offline through a car dealer:

• Step 1: Go to your automobile dealer to start the BH series application.
• Step 2: The dealer submits Form 20 through the Vahan Portal on your behalf.
• Step 3: Provide the necessary documents, such as an official ID card or Form 60 work certificate.
• Step 4: The RTO reviews and approves the Bharat Series registration.

Pay the applicable registration fee or motor vehicle tax online to complete the process.

Eligible vehicle owners must submit the following documents to apply for a BH number plate in Telangana:

• A photocopy of your vehicle’s invoice provided by the dealer at the time of purchase
• Employment certificate or official ID card if you are a government employee. For private employees, a Form 16 is mandatory for income proof along with the employment certificate
• PAN card, Aadhaar card, or any other ID proof issued by the government
• If the applicant doesn't have the PAN card, they must provide a Form 60 or 61 as per applicability
• Address proof such as a passport, Aadhaar card, rental agreement, or utility bill
• A valid insurance certificate for your vehicle
• Duly filled and signed Form 20 (application form) for vehicle registration

The BH number plate is reserved exclusively for personal, non-transport vehicles like passenger cars and two-wheelers. Commercial vehicles such as buses, taxis, and trucks are not eligible for BH number plate registration, ensuring it remains limited to private use only.

Eligible categories are as follows:

• All permanent employees of central and state government departments are eligible.
• Members of the armed forces, paramilitary forces, and other defence-related services.
• Staff of organisations such as BHEL, ONGC, BSNL, and similar PSUs.
• Employees working in companies or firms that have offices in four or more states or union territories are eligible to apply.

The BH registration Telangana renewal procedure is a simple one. Initially, the BH series vehicle owners need to pay their road tax every 2 years and then annually after completing the initial 14-year period, at half of the previous rate. Here are the steps to follow when renewing your car’s BH series number plate in Telangana:

• Step 1: Log in to the Parivahan Portal: To begin with, the renewal procedure requires access to the official portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
• Step 2: Select the Service: Navigate to the Online Services tab and click on “Pay Your Tax”; select your state as Telangana.
• Step 3: Provide the Vehicle Details: Enter the last five digits of your vehicle's registration and chassis number. Your vehicle's details and the due road tax amount will be automatically displayed on the system.
• Step 4: Pay the Fees: Select the payment option for your car’s road tax for two years or in multiples (four or six years, for example). The revised due date will appear on your tax information page after the payment has been completed and verified.
• Step 5: Get Confirmation: Your renewal status will be updated on the site, and you will receive a confirmation along with the next payment deadline.

A BH number plate in Telangana does not change any legal obligations under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Vehicle owners must still have a valid motor insurance policy such as car insurance, and the BH series itself does not affect the insurance premium—premium rates still depend on factors like vehicle type, model, age, and location, offering flexibility without any added costs.
