Electricity is one of the most critical facets of our lives and is recognised as a basic human need. Moreover, electricity plays a crucial role in the overall development of a country. Thus, availability of electricity to every Indian household becomes very important.

Mr. Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar, launched Har Ghar Bijli Yojana on 15th November 2016 to curb the scarcity of electricity in Bihar.

Har Ghar Bijli Yojana belongs to the Saat Nischay policy that brought Nitish Kumar Government to power. This is a progressive scheme that has been launched to provide electricity connection to every household in Bihar.

The State Government announced that nearly 20 million houses in Bihar would receive electricity connection under this scheme. Moreover, this scheme will facilitate families that fall under Above Poverty Level (APL) category but do not get electricity supply.

The main objectives of Har Ghar Bijli Yojana are listed below. 

• To provide electricity connection to families facing various problems due to the scarcity of electricity connection.
• To ensure a finer way of living to the residents of Bihar and ensure overall development.
• Financial help will also be provided to curb the issue.

Features of Har Ghar Bijli Yojana in Bihar are – 

• This scheme will cover 50% of families living in rural parts and belonging to the APL category and still not getting an electricity connection.
• Families belonging to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category will not get the benefits of this scheme because they are covered under Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana.
• Apart from those under Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana, all residents will be benefited under Har Ghar Bijli Yojana.
• Beneficiaries will receive free electricity, i.e. just the installation charge and electricity connection will not be taken. However, the beneficiaries have to pay the monthly electricity bill monthly according to the usage.
• In case any family denies taking the electricity connection, the family head has to provide a proper reason along with a written assertion for the denial of the electricity connection.

50% of the families in Bihar belonging to the APL category will get free electricity connection under this scheme. Har Ghar Bijli Yojana in Bihar will further help in the state's socio-economic development.

You can apply for Har Ghar Bijli Yojana in Bihar via the following steps – 

• Visit BSPHCL E-Corner.
• Click on ‘Consumer Suvidha Activities’ on the homepage.
• Apply for a new connection to view the DISCOMs names under North Bihar Power DISCOM or South Bihar Power DISCOM.
• Then enter your contact number and generate the OTP.
• Application form for New Connection will appear on the screen.
• Fill in all details in the application form and click on 'Submit' to confirm.
