Visakhapatnam Airport acts as a civil enclave on an Indian Navy airbase named INS Dega. Inaugurated in 1981, this international airport operates both international and domestic flights.
It covers a total area of about 350 acres and has two runways of 3,050 by 45 metres and 1,829 by 45 metres. It is only 8 km from the city centre. Recently, the government opened new taxi tracks and improved the terminal facilities.
This is another international airport in Andhra Pradesh, located in Gannavaram, Vijayawada. It is located near National Highway 16, which connects Chennai and Kolkata. It was inaugurated during World War II as an army base, but turned into a regular airport in 2003.
Being about 18 km away from the city centre, it offers excellent transport and connectivity. A recent development was the expansion of the terminal and runway.
Tirupati Airport is another addition to the list of the airports of Andhra Pradesh, and spreads across an area of 312 acres. It was commissioned in 1971, and the new terminal and runway were developed later in 1993. It is only 14 km away from the city centre. Recently, the government has planned to extend the runway for 240 m at one end and 1,284 m at the other for easier passenger accommodation.
Located in Kadapa, it is a domestic airport in Andhra Pradesh. It is only 10 km from the city centre and has a 2km long runway capable of handling huge aircraft. This airport was constructed around 1953, and started functioning regularly from the 1980s. The state government has spent over ₹42 Crore to work on its up-gradation and improvement.
Kurnool Airport, also known as the Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy Airport, is about 18 km from Kurnool City Centre and is located on National Highway 40. It was recently inaugurated in 2019 after a long period of investment issues and construction. It is located on National Highway 40, which increases its road connectivity. The government is still working on various parts of expansion.
This airport is located on National Highway 516E and serves as a domestic airport of Andhra Pradesh. It is about 16 km away from the city centre, and easily accessible through National Highway 516E. Constructed during the British era, it started serving its role from 1995. Mostly, the helicopters of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and other government agencies for oil exploration make use of this airport.
This is a private airport located in the Puttaparthi area of Andhra Pradesh, dealing with chartered planes and private jets instead of commercial flights. It was inaugurated in 1990 for providing emergency air services for the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences. It is only 4 km from the city centre. The terminal is expected to expand to accommodate at least 100 passengers.
The Nagarjuna Sagar Airport in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh has one paved runway designated 09/27 oriented by measures of 4384 ft or 1336 m in length. It is about 11 km from the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, and has connectivity through road. The government has plans to upgrade this airport to introduce scheduled commercial operations here.
