Primarily serving the state capital Guwahati, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport was established in 1958. It is the 12th busiest Indian airport, located about 26 kilometres away from the capital city.Â
Apart from domestic locations such as Kolkata, Delhi, and Bengaluru, this airport offers international flights to Bangladesh, Singapore, Yangon, and Thailand. All of these utilities identify it among the most important airports of Assam.
About 15 kilometres from the main city of Mohanbari lies Dibrugarh airport. It was established in the 1950s with the goal to distribute the huge number of passengers attracted by the Guwahati airport. Recently the airport was upgraded with a brand new terminal to accommodate more passengers.Â
One of the busiest airports of Assam, Silchar has been operating since the year 1944. This airport holds the distinction of being the 5th busiest airport in north-east India. Presently, it accommodates domestic flights all across different parts of India. Silchar Airport is situated approximately 29 kilometres away from the centre of Kumbhirgram.
Lilabari Airport, also known as North Lakhimpur Airport, is located 8 kilometres north from the Lilabari city. The airport was inaugurated in 2003 after 4 years of construction. Presently, Its runway is undergoing modification to host larger aircrafts as well. It is also featured with night lights to facilitate night-time take-off and landing at the airport.Â
Originally built as a base for the allied forces during the 1940s, Rupsi Airport caters to the residents of Dhubri in the present time. It is also an effective layover for tourists visiting the several National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries around this region.Â
This is among the notable airports in Assam, situated 17 kilometres north of Rupsi, to facilitate domestic flights to Kolkata and Guwahati.Â
Jorhat Airport, also known as Rowriah Airport, is located 8 kilometres from the city’s centre. Presently the airstrip is shared by the Indian Air Force with the public. Functioning since 1950, it is well-equipped to provide air logistics to remote parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.
The Government of Assam has sanctioned ₹156 crores for the expansion of this airport to make it commercially viable. This expansion will turn Jorhat home to several airlines in Assam.
Tezpur Airport is primarily maintained by the Air Force. It is easily accessible from the main city which is about 15 kilometres away. Built as an important base point for RAF during the early 1940s, the airport now caters to cargo movement and military aid at times of crises. Tezpur Airport has commercial flights for Guwahati, Lilabari, Kolkata and Pasighat.
