Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, the busiest airport in the state, is situated in Shamshabad, about 20 km south of Hyderabad. The airport initiated operation in 2008. Most of the leading airlines operate flights from this airport daily.
The Dundigal Air Force Academy is situated just about 23 km away from the twin cities of Secunderabad and Hyderabad. The airport was established in 1969 and commenced operations in 1971. This facility was established to train cadets and teach them skills such as air traffic control, joint service training, ground officers training, etc.
Hakimpet Air Force Station is an Indian Air Force base under the Training Command. Situated within 18.8 km from Secunderabad, the base is used for Fighter Training Wing, Helicopter Training School, etc. The Non-Technical Training Institute (NTTI) at Air Force Station Hakimpet also serves as a training facility for Non-Technical Air Warriors. Over 200 airmen trainees receive administrative assistant trade training from the NTTI, which is led by a Chief Instructor.
Nizamabad Airport is a planned greenfield airport in Jaklan Pali, Nizamabad District, Telangana. The Airport Authority of India approved this plan in June 2013. The project location is on National Highway 44. Telangana state government is proposing to build the airport on 1,161 acres.
Kothagudem Airport is a proposed new airport development that will serve Kotagdem, a major industrial centre in Telangana. The airport will be built on a 1,600-hectare site in Punugulu Chellaka.
However, the Ministry of Civil Aviation said Kothagudem Airport was not included in the preliminary list of underserved airports in the Regional Connection Scheme (RCS)-UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) program document.
There is currently only one active airport in Telangana, but the state might need more airports as it is an important business and cultural centre of India. Hence, the Government has proposed some plans for developing new Telangana airports.
