The mosque is quite famous for its construction story, which took a century to make. Tal-ul-Masjid is one of the mosques that has had the longest construction years in history.

Shah Jahan Begum, the queen of Nawab Syed Siddiq Hasan Khan of Bhopal, started the construction in 1877 during the reign of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the Mughal Emperor.

Shah Jahan Begum ruled the city of Bhopal from 1868 to 1901. She contributed to many projects, such as schools, postal services, railway services, dams, and the development of the royal military.

Due to the paucity of funds, the mosque's construction abruptly stopped. Her daughter, Sultan Jahan Begum, also tried to complete the construction during her reign but failed.

Another reason for incomplete construction was the wars. India was also struggling for independence; hence, even after trying hard, Sultana couldn’t complete construction throughout her lifetime.

After a long break, Allama Mohammad Imran Khan Nadwi Azhari and Maulana Sayed Hashmat Ali Sahab resumed construction in 1971. Finally, in 1985, the construction was completed, and the mosque was inaugurated.

Although the construction took a century to complete, the monument is an absolute visual treat to the eyes.

• The Masjid is spread over a total area of 4,30,000 square feet. The ancient motifs of Syrian mosques inspire the mosque and hold similarities with the Jama Masjid of Delhi.
• Once you enter, you will be awestruck by the beautiful pink main prayer hall on the western side. On either side of the hall are two 18-storey tall octagonal minarets with white domes on top of them.
• The main prayer hall also features four recessed archways and nine cusped multifold apertures. The huge pillars in the archways support 27 ceilings, of which 16 are beautifully designed with petalled motifs.
• The floor is made of marble and beautifully decorated with fine artwork, such as the Jama Masjid of Delhi and Lahore’s Badshahi Mosque. The courtyard is huge and could accommodate 1,75,000 people.
• On the right are a series of rooms with blue doors solely for students studying in the mosque, which is also a madrasa for students where they teach subjects like English and Maths.
• The mosque also features a zenana (women’s gallery) where women can perform prayers, which was unusual then.
