9th Para SF: Meaning, Eligibility & How to Join

The Indian Army's 9th Parachute Regiment, Special Forces, also known as the 9th Para SF, is an elite force. It is known for its remarkable combat capabilities and specialised training and conducts covert operations, counter-terrorism missions, and unconventional warfare assignments.

The famed Meghdoot Force, led by Lt. Colonel Megh Singh, gave rise to the 9th Parachute Battalion (Special Forces), also known as the 9th Para SF (Special Forces). The Indian Army's Parachute Regiment (Commando)'s 9th Para SF was the first Special Operations unit. 

The 9th Para SF (Pirates) is one of the earliest Indian Army Special Forces Battalions, having been established in July 1966 in the South Block of the Ministry of Defence (MoD), with Lieutenant General Harbaksh Singh serving as the inaugural Commanding Officer (CO).

The 9th Parachute Regiment, Special Forces (9th Para SF) is responsible for various specialised and high-risk operations in various locations. Among their key tasks and responsibilities are:

1. Specialised Warfare

The SF is experienced in unconventional warfare methods, which include guerilla warfare, sabotage, and disruption of enemy forces in collaboration with local populations.

2. Direct Enforcement

They can carry out direct action missions, which entail engaging and killing high-value targets, including enemy leaders, sites, or important infrastructure.

3.Surveillance

The team is particularly adept at reconnaissance and intelligence-collecting tasks. They acquire intelligence on enemy actions, geography, and prospective dangers to enhance strategic decision-making.

4. Special Operations Aide

They complement bigger military operations by doing specialised duties that need their specialised skills and training. The 9th Parachute Special Forces Group has extensive expertise in conducting successful counter-insurgency operations in the Kashmir Valley. 

Multiple attempts by Pakistani forces to cross the Line of Control (LoC) were also thwarted by 9th Para SF.

5. Rescue of Hostages

They are trained to deal with hostage situations, using precision tactics to retrieve hostages from risky surroundings while minimising collateral harm.

6. Specialised Tactics

The force is skilled in various insertion techniques, including airborne and heliborne operations. To carry out their duties, they can sneak behind enemy lines.

7. Surgical Strikes

The SF can undertake surgical strikes, specifically targeting enemy assets while limiting the escalation of the larger battle.

8. Overseas Deployments

The 9th Para SF can be deployed globally to serve India's foreign policy objectives through peacekeeping or other missions.

9. Assistance and Training

They are frequently involved in training and assisting friendly foreign troops, thereby improving the capabilities of partner nations' military and security professionals.

10. Disaster Aid

Aside from combat tasks, Para SF can be used in disaster relief missions, where they can use their specialised skills to help during natural disasters or catastrophes.

1. Screening Phase

2. Physical and Mental Cognitive Exams

Complete the Special Forces Orientation Course (SFOC), a preparation course that assesses your adaptability for special forces training.

3. Special Forces Selection

4. Special Forces Qualification Course (SFQC)

If chosen, participate in the SFQC, a comprehensive training programme that includes all aspects of special operations.

5. Trade Selection

Based on applicants' abilities and performance during training, they are assigned certain roles within the Para SF.

6. Specialised Training

In the Para SF, you will receive specialised training for your chosen trade, strengthening your competencies for certain jobs.

Aside from a monthly salary, Para and Para SF Commandos receive a variety of allowances. They are entitled to the following benefits:

1. Salary allowance

To compensate for the effect of inflation, the GOI pays the DA to all Para and Para SF Commandos. The GOI revises the DA every three months using the All India Consumer Price Index.

2. Allowance for housing expenses (HRA)

HRA is a wage component the GOI pays to Para Commandos to offset living expenses in a specific city. The amount of HRA is determined by factors such as pay, compensation structure, and city of residence.

3. Children's educational perks

Defence personnel are entitled to a set percentage of educational benefits for their children. The GOI reimburses tuition and hostel expenses in full and pays a specific sum toward the cost of books, uniforms, and apparel each year.

4. Deputation allowances

Para and Para SF commandos have two options with deputation allowance. They may get 50% of their deputation allowance in addition to service commissions or 100% of their deputation allowance in lieu of service commissions.

5. Allowance for Special Forces

The Army's Special Forces allowance varies according to the rank of a commando in the Army.

6. Other perks

Aside from these benefits, a Para Commando is entitled to a set number of yearly, casualty, and study leaves. They also have access to canteens, which offer needed commodities at a reduced price. After retirement, these experts can also apply for low-interest loans and register in MBA programmes.
