RTO Raigad

Raigad belongs to the Konkan division of Maharashtra. Its western boundary is formed by the Arabian Sea coast and is famous for the heritage site, Raigad fort. There is one RTO office in Raigad with the code MH-06. This RTO was created to maintain transport law and order according to the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988. It is also responsible for providing vehicle-related services on different levels.

RTO Raigad offers the following services:

• Conducting driving tests for issuing driver’s licence.

• Ensuring road safety measures.

• Collection of road tax.

• Issuing vehicle registration certificates and renewing them.

• Issuing and renewing different types of vehicle permits for tourists.

• Registering change of address in the registration certificates.

• Conducting fitness tests for issuing vehicle fitness certificates. 

• Issuing a No Objection Certificate for vehicle registration in another state.

Raigad RTO issues various types of driving licences for different types of vehicles used for varying purposes:

• Two-wheeler licence

• Motor vehicle licence for those without gears

• Motor vehicle licence for those with gears

• Light motor vehicles for transport purposes

• Light motor vehicles for non-transport purposes

• Heavy goods vehicle licence

• Heavy trailer licence

• Open licence for heavy passenger motor vehicles

Raigad Provides two types of vehicle registration:

• Temporary Registration

• Permanent Registration

The registration fees depend upon the type of vehicle and vehicle cost. However, the following are the registration fees for specific vehicles:

• Two-wheelers Including Scooters - ₹50

• Three-wheelers and Four-wheelers for Private use - ₹600

• Three-wheelers and Four-wheelers for Commercial use - ₹1000

• Heavy Passenger Vehicle - ₹1000

• Heavy Goods Vehicle - ₹1500

• Medium Passenger Vehicle - ₹1000

• Medium Good Vehicle - ₹1000

• Other Vehicles – ₹3000

A duplicate registration certificate fee is half the amount of the vehicle's registration.

The road tax levied is calculated based on the vehicle's type, make and usage. In Raigad, the Maharashtra Road Tax structure is followed and is calculated separately for two-wheelers and four-wheelers, depending upon engine capacity and fuel types. 

Road taxes levied by RTO Raigad:

• Road tax on Two-wheelers: 10%-13% of vehicle cost subject to a minimum cost of ₹1500

• Road tax on Four-wheelers: 7%-15% of vehicle cost ranging from 10 lakhs to 20 lakhs.

If you do not follow the traffic rules in Raigad, you will receive an E-challan. In case of delayed payment, your driving licence may get suspended. Below is the list of fines in Raigad:

• Driving Without Licence: ₹5000 or community service

• Over Speeding: ₹1000 - ₹4000

• Driving Under Influence: ₹1000 or 6 years imprisonment

• Driving Without a Seatbelt: ₹1000 or community service

• Driving While Using Mobile: ₹5000

It is mandatory to have motor insurance before you start driving it. Third-party car insurance is compulsory, while a comprehensive insurance policy is not mandatory. If you do not get your car insured and drive it on the road, you will have to pay a fine of ₹2000 for the first offence, and ₹4000, for the second time. 

Recent traffic-related events in Raigad include:

• In January 2023, a horrific accident took the lives of ten people. This happened in Mangaon when a truck and a car collided head-on.

• E-challan worth ₹9.5 crores were issued to traffic rules violators in Raigad district, and an amount of 2.11 crore rupees were collected as fines in 2022 in Raigad.

• Motorists protested many times in 2022 about the potholes and the poor road conditions of the highways. The dust particles from the potholes make it difficult for motorists to drive on the highway because it decreases visibility and navigation and is also a health concern.

Raigad has seen a huge number of accidents on highways for speeding and rash driving. Strict actions on the matter have been taken along with running various campaigns. Some of the campaigns are as follows:

• Traffic Unit of Raigad 

About 50% of vehicular accidents are attributed to bike accidents. The Raigad police, therefore, started a road safety campaign in 2020. During this campaign, the police have registered more than 2000 complaints against people not wearing helmets. 

This can be attributed to a lack of awareness and education among people. Hence the aim of campaigns is to educate rural people.

• The Highway Police

The highway police in Raigad range have taken strict action against traffic rules violators. The highway police have fined around lakhs of motorists and have undertaken various such initiatives that reduced accidents and death on the Mumbai-Pune expressway.
