As per Motor Vehicle Act 1988, every vehicle owner must register their respective vehicles in India. After the successful completion of vehicle registration, officials issue a registration certificate to the owner. As you receive a registration number from Uttar Pradesh RTO, you must install this number on your vehicle's number plate.

In Uttar Pradesh, the registration certificate of a non-transport vehicle is valid for 15 years. Post this tenure, the vehicle must be registered after every 5 years. Additionally, your vehicle’s fitness certificate will be valid for nearly 2 years from the registration date.

All vehicle owners residing in Uttar Pradesh must mandatorily pay a registration charge to Uttar Pradesh RTO for registering their vehicles. The vehicle registration charges include:

• Registration Charges: ₹600 (For all vehicles)
• Hypothecation Charges: ₹1500 (In case you purchase your car on a loan)
• Number Plate Charges: ₹230 to ₹400 (It is similar to a high-security number plate)
• Parking Fee/State Development Charges: ₹2000 (MCD parking fees for cars under ₹4 lakh
• MCD Parking Fees for cars Above ₹4 Lakh (Applicable in Some States): ₹4000 
• Temporary Registration Charges: ₹1200 to ₹1500 (temporary registration for up to 1 month)
• Road Tax Charges

1. For Cars Under ₹10 Lakh: 8%

2. For Cars Above ₹10 Lakh: 10%

• Used Cars Under 15 years: Green Tax on registration renewal + Smart Card

The government of Uttar Pradesh charges road tax to raise the funds for infrastructure maintenance of these roads. Eventually, UP road tax is calculated separately for two-wheelers, four-wheelers and commercial vehicles.

Two-Wheelers:

• Moped With Unladen Weight Below 90.72 Kg: ₹150
•  Price of Two-Wheeler Up to ₹0.20 Lakh: 2% of the vehicle’s price
• Price of Two-Wheeler Over ₹0.20 Lakh and Below ₹0.60 Lakh: 4% of the vehicle’s price
• Cost of Two-Wheeler Over ₹0.60 Lakh and Up to ₹2 Lakhs: 6% of the vehicle’s price
• Price of Two-Wheeler Exceeding ₹2 Lakhs: 8% of the vehicle’s price

Four-Wheelers:

• Cars Costing Up to ₹6 Lakhs: 3% of the car’s value
• Cars Costing Between ₹6 Lakhs and 10 Lakhs: 6% of the car’s value
• Cars Costing Between ₹10 Lakhs and 20 Lakhs: 8% of the vehicle’s value
• Cars costing Above ₹20 Lakhs: 9% of the car’s value

Commercial Vehicles (as per their loading capacity):

• Not More Than 1 Ton: ₹665
•  Above 1 Ton and Below 2 Tons: ₹940
• Over 2 Tons and Below 4 Tons: ₹1430
• Above 4 Tons and Below 6 Tons: ₹1915
• Over 6 Tons and Below 8 Tons: ₹2375
• Above 8 Tons and Below 9 Tons: ₹2865
•  Over 9 Tons and Below 10 Tons: ₹3320
• Above 10 Ton: ₹3320 + ₹470 Per Ton

Failing to pay road tax in Uttar Pradesh is an offence for which you have to pay a fine. The amount bills to 4% of the unpaid tax for every month. However, this amount will not go beyond twice the actual amount due.

Yes, it is mandatory for an individual to drive a vehicle with insurance in Uttar Pradesh. It is mandatory to have a motor insurance, at least third-party insurance while driving on the streets of Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh, witnesses extreme cold and fog which increases road accidents and mishaps on road. To minimise the same, a report says, the Uttar Pradesh government has recently sanctioned an amount of ₹7.4 crores for creating road safety campaigns and awareness in the state. The money will be used for organising awareness programs in schools and institutions to educate individuals regarding road rules.

Officials will make efforts to launch road safety campaigns state-wise, to ensure a reduction of the untimely death of individuals (mostly young) due to road accidents.

This fund will also be used to purchase laser speed guns so that it can issue challans for speeding violations.
