Jaunpur RTO Office

Jaunpur is a city in the Jaunpur district in Uttar Pradesh. It is the district headquarters which has 2 Lok Sabha and 9 Vidhan Sabha constituencies. In this city, it is mandatory to register one's vehicle at Jaunpur Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) under the Motor Vehicles Act, of 1988. RTOs play a crucial role in maintaining and monitoring a seamless flow of traffic.

Jaunpur RTO is responsible for the following functions.

• Issuing learner's licence and permanent licence

• Issuing registration of vehicles

• Providing duplicate registration, duplicate licence, hypothecation certificate

• Renewing driving licence and  registration certificate

• Promotion of road safety

• Road tax collection

• Reform and initiate new rules

• Charging penalties against breaking traffic rules

• Issuing special permits for vehicle authorisation

• Regulation of driving schools

There are several types of driving licences that Jaunpur RTO issues. Here is a list of some of these: 

• Heavy Goods Motor Vehicle Licence

• Heavy Trailer Licence (For people already possessing heavy motor licence)

• Light Motor Vehicle Licence (Non-transport, commercial)

• Light Motor Vehicle Licence (Motorcycle with engine capacity of more than 50cc and with gear) 

• Two-wheeler Licence (Less than 50cc engine capacity) 

Jaunpur RTO provides two types of vehicle registration: 

• Permanent registration

• Temporary Registration 

After successful registration one will get the number for the number plate of his or her vehicle.

UP road tax depends on the type and subtype of vehicles. Jaunpur follows a similar system. Here is a short list:

For Two-wheelers

• Two-wheeler costing below ₹0.20 – 2% of their price

• Two-wheeler costing over ₹0.20 lakh and up to ₹0.60 lakh – 4% of their price 

For Four-wheelers

• Cars costing below ₹6.00 lakh – 3% of their price 

• Cars costing between ₹6.00 lakh and 10.00 lakh – 6% of their price

• Vehicles with loading capacity below 1 ton - ₹665

• Vehicles with loading capacity above 1 ton and below 2 tons - ₹940 

There are drastic changes done to the traffic violation fines as per The Motor Vehicles Act, 2019. Currently, the RTO of Jaunpur follows the standards of Uttar Pradesh traffic fines. Here is a short list to provide some idea about the consequences of not abiding by the safety rules in Jaunpur: 

• General offence: ₹500 (first time), ₹1500 (second time)

• Over speeding: ₹1000 -2000 (light motor vehicle), ₹2000-4000 (medium weight passenger/goods vehicle)

• Drunk driving: ₹10000 (first time), ₹15000 and imprisonment (second time) 

• Overloading the vehicle: ₹20000

• Usage of horn in silent zones: ₹2000 (first time), ₹4000 (second time)

Yes, it is mandatory to have a motor insurance when driving a vehicle in Jaunpur. In addition, one should have third-party insurance before taking the vehicle to public roads in Jaunpur. There is a fine of ₹1000 and/or imprisonment (up to 3 months) for driving a vehicle without one.

Overall traffic in Jaunpur is flowing smoothly; however, there are reports of some fatal accidents in October and December 2022. In October there was a bus accident that resulted in a woman's death and 5 others suffering injuries and in December there was a report of 2 school kid's deaths due to the overturning of a bus.

Currently, there are a large number of four-wheelers and two-wheelers in this district, which has a massive impact on the city's traffic system. To ensure that there are fewer accidents on the road, the government is running various campaigns to make people aware of traffic dos and don’ts.  The state of UP has also conducted a month-long campaign on road safety from January to February 2023.
