How to Renew Driving License in Uttar Pradesh in 2026?

As the most populated state in India, Uttar Pradesh has a massive number of vehicles, be they private or commercial. Therefore, it has become more important for authorities to check everyone’s driving licence and their validity.

As per the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, it is mandatory to carry a valid DL when driving on Indian roads. It is a legal document that indicates the individual’s understanding of road signs and traffic laws and provides the authority to drive a vehicle on public roads.  

At the same time, it is also an important document for claiming car insurance. Given its importance, it is essential to renew your driving licence if its validity expires. So, read to find out the simple procedures for renewing your driving licence in UP in 2024.

In Uttar Pradesh, a driving licence is valid for 20 years or until the holder turns 40, whichever comes earlier. After that, it will be re-issued for 10 years and 5 years thereafter.

There is a 30-day grace period from the date of expiry in which you can renew your driving licence. A nominal fee of ₹300 will be chargeable on renewal requests after this time period. 

Additionally, a fine of ₹1,000 will be levied each year from the grace period’s expiry date.

In case you fail to renew your driving licence within the 30-day grace period, you are liable to pay a penalty of ₹300. 

Moreover, if you cannot renew your driving licence within a year after its expiry, you must apply for a new one by appearing for a driving test and paying the requisite fine.

Step 1: Visit Parivahan Sewa's official portal. Select "Online Services" and select "Driving Licence Related Services."

Step 2: Select the state "Uttar Pradesh" from the drop-down list. A page will redirect you to Parivahan Sarathi's official portal.

Step 3: Select "Driving Licence" and choose "Services on DL".

Step 4: Follow all the instructions and click on “Confirm”.

Step 5: Enter the relevant information such as driving licence number, date of birth, and category of driving licence holder. Also, select state and RTO.

Step 6: Confirm the details and choose driving licence renewal as your required service. Once an acknowledgement slip is generated, take a printout of it.

• Visit your nearest RTO
• Fill in Form 2. You can also download it from the official portal UP RTO.
• Attach the relevant documents and submit them along with the prescribed fee.

Once verified, you can receive the renewed driving licence as soon as possible.

Keep the documents ready while applying for driving licence renewal Uttar Pradesh to avoid inconvenience:

• Correctly filled application through Form 9

• Applicants with Non-Transport Vehicles must submit a self-declaration of physical fitness via Form no.1.
• Duly signed Form 1-A is applicable for applicants over 40 years

• Self-attested documents such as Aadhaar cards. It will serve as age and address proof of the applicant

Step 1: Visit the official website of Parivahan Sewa. Select "Driving Licence Related Services" under the "Online Services" tab.

Step 2: Select "Uttar Pradesh" as a state from the drop-down list. Now opt for "Application Status", available at the right side corner of your screen.

Step 3: Enter your application number and date of birth. Submit it after entering the captcha code.

Alternatively, you can also check the status by accessing the official portal of UP RTO. 

1. Select "Online Services" and click on the "Application Status".
2. You will be redirected to the Parivahan Sathi. Accordingly, perform the remaining steps as mentioned above.

RTO advises applicants to check the status of renewal of DL in UP online after two weeks from the date of application. However, if you cannot view any status regarding your application, visit your nearest RTO.

Before you apply for the renewal of your driving licence, here are some of the crucial guidelines that you need to remember:

• If you apply for renewal after 5 years, be ready to retake a driving test to obtain a new licence.
• If you apply for renewal after 30 days of DL's expiry, pay a nominal charge of ₹30.

As per the Motor Vehicles Act, you may end up paying a hefty fine of ₹5,000 for holding an expired driving licence. Hence, make sure to opt for renewal of driving license in UP and avoid paying a lump sum penalty. Also, keep the guidelines in mind to avoid inconvenience.
