How to Renew Driving Licence in Bangalore in 2026?

The Motor Vehicles Act 1988 mandates every Indian citizen to hold a driving licence. Your driving licence serves as a document proof of being a certified driver. It is also an essential document to claim insurance for your vehicle. Although, once the validity of this document expires, you need to apply for the same.

The validity of a driving licence in Bangalore for a non-commercial vehicle is 20 years. Alternatively, it is valid till a driving licence holder is 50 years. After its expiry, you need to renew it every 5 years. At the same time, the validity of a commercial vehicle’s driving licence is 3 years.

In Bangalore, the grace period for renewing a driving licence is 30 days. In case you fail to apply for DL renewal within this time period, a penalty of ₹300 is applicable.  

If you fail to renew your licence within 30 days of expiry, you will be charged a nominal ₹300 fee. For additional delays, a penalty of ₹1,000 per year will be charged. 

Moreover, if you do not renew your licence within 5 years of expiry, you must apply for a new driving licence by retaking the driving exam and paying the requisite fees.  

• Step 1: Go to the RTO Bangalore portal. Select “Driving Licence Related Services” from the drop-down list under “Parivahan”. 

• Step 2: Select “Apply for DL Renewal”. Enter your driving licence number and date of birth. Click “Get DL Details”.

• Step 3: You will be redirected to a page covering information about your driving licence. This includes your name, validity period and vital data. Now complete the following steps -
  • Confirm the available data by choosing “Yes”. 
    
  • Go to “Submit Request” and select Karnataka.
  • Choose your nearest RTO.

If you select an RTO different from the previous one to receive driving-licence related services, you need to apply for a “change of address”. Accordingly, pay ₹200 for this service.

• Step 4: Now, choose “Renewal of Driving Licence”. Fill in the online application form. Now scan, upload and submit all supporting documents. 
• Step 5: Pay the necessary renewal fees and download the receipt. After successfully verifying documents, officials will issue your renewed driving licence within the least possible time.

Individuals without internet access can opt for an offline application. Collect the driving licence renewal form online in Bangalore from your nearest RTO. You can also download forms from the official RTO website of Karnataka. You need to submit the following forms:

• Form 1 (Self-declaration physical fitness form for non-transport vehicles)
• Form 1A (If an applicant’s age is over 40 years)
• Form 2

Fill it in with relevant information such as name, Aadhaar card number etc. and submit it to the local RTO.

Keep the following documents handy while you apply for the renewal of your driving licence in Bangalore:

• Address and age proof such as the Aadhaar card or birth certificate.
• Acknowledgement receipt.
• Form 1, 1A and 2.
• 2 photographs (passport-size).
• A copy of your original driving licence, which is about to expire.

• In case of a minor, submit a declaration of parents or guardians.

1. Select Parivahan and choose “Driving Licence Related Services”.

2. Opt for application status. Enter the similar data mentioned above and submit.

Go through the 2 guidelines before you apply for the renewal of a driving licence in Bangalore -

• Your application for renewal of your driving licence is valid only within 1 month before the expiry date.
• If the renewal application is more than 30 days after the expiry date, pay an additional fee of ₹30.
