PAN verification is a process conducted by the Income-Tax Department of India to check the authenticity of PAN card holders. It is to verify their identity and the legitimacy of their submitted documents.

Mentioned below are some of the institutions or organisations that are eligible for PAN verification:

• Credit Card Companies
• Mutual Funds
• Income Tax Projects
• Central and State government agencies
• Educational Institutions that are established by Regulatory Bodies
• Goods and Services Tax Networks
• Companies that are required to submit Annual Information Return
• Central KYC Registry
• Reserve Bank of India
• Housing Finance Companies
• Non-Banking Financial Institutions or NBFCs approved by the Reserve Bank of India
• Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) approved investment advisors

The documents required for online PAN verification are as follows:

• A signed copy with the terms and conditions of the transaction on the organisation's letterhead
• An authorisation letter
• A demand draft as renewal fee

Besides the documents mentioned above, the following details will also be required:

Details Related to the Organisation:

• Organisation’s Name
• Payment Account Number (PAN) and Tax Deduction Number (TAN) of the company
• Business Category
• Contact details of the organisation

Payment Details:

• Total amount payable
• Method of payment
• Number of the payment instrument

Details of Digital Signature Certificate (DCS):

• Name of the certifying authority
• Digital Signature Certificate’s class
• Serial number of the Digital Signature Certificate

Applicants can verify their PAN card using their date of birth, Aadhaar number and PAN number. There are 6 different modes of PAN verification:

1. File-based PAN Card Verification

Large organisations generally carry out this type of verification. In this mode of verification, users can upload a maximum of 1000 PAN cards for verification at once. However, they must follow a specific file structure; otherwise, they will be rejected immediately.

Steps to Verify:

Step 1 - Visit the e-filling website of the Income Tax Department

Step 2 - Log in to your account

Step 3 - Upload the files in the specified format

Step 4 - Click on ‘Submit’

Step 5 - This method takes around 24 hours to display the results

Step 6 - The files may be rejected if they are not uploaded in the specific format

2. Screen-based PAN Card Verification

This verification process allows up to 5 PAN cards to be verified. Users can log in, add details of 5 PAN cards, and submit them.

Steps to Verify:

Step 1 - Visit the Income Tax Department’s e-filling website

Step 2 - Log in to your account

Step 3 - Provide the PAN number

Step 4 - Click on ‘Submit’

Step 5 - The PAN card details will be displayed on the screen

3. By using your Date of Birth:

Follow the below-mentioned steps for PAN card verification using your date of birth:

Step 1 - Login to your account from the Income Tax Department’s e-filling website

Step 2 - Click on ‘Verify your PAN’

Step 3 - Enter your PAN number, name and date of birth, enter the Captcha, then click on 'Submit'

Step 4 - Your PAN card details will be displayed on the screen

4. By using your Aadhaar Number:

Follow the below-mentioned steps for PAN card verification using an Aadhaar number:

Step 1 - Go to the e-filling portal of the Income Tax Department

Step 2 - From the ‘Quick Links’ section, click on ‘Link Aadhaar’

Step 3 - A new page will open

Step 4 - Select the ‘Click Here’ option to check the status of your PAN-Aadhaar link

Step 5 - You will be redirected to another page for PAN verification

Step 6 - Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number

Step 7 - Click on ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’

Step 8 - Your PAN card details will appear on the screen

5. By using your PAN Number:

Follow the below-mentioned steps for PAN card verification by PAN number:

Step 1 - Visit the Income Tax Department’s e-filling portal

Step 2 - Click on ‘Quick Links’ and select ‘Verify Your PAN’

Step 3 - Enter your PAN number, full name (according to PAN card), and date of birth and choose the applicable status

Step 4 - Enter the Captcha and click on 'Submit'

Step 5 - Once done, the screen will display your verified PAN details

6. Software-based (API) Verification

In this process, users must install software to verify PAN cards online by visiting the website.

Applicants will receive an acknowledgement number during registration, and you can use this number to track their PAN card verification status.

When applications are accepted, a message is displayed on the screen stating the same. It also displays the status of registration along with the User Id.

If an application is rejected, a message will be displayed on the screen, which will state the same.

There are various ways of PAN card verification, some of which are instant, while some take time. However, all the procedures are simple and hassle-free. Verifying the PAN card details is important to ensure smooth transactional procedures.
