RTO Office Durg

Durg RTO operates under the Transport Commissioner and primarily functions in the implementation of the rules and regulations of the Motor Vehicles Act, of 1988. It is a heavily populated city, the second largest city in Chhattisgarh, and a major industrial centre. The RTO Durg has been formulated under Section 213(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and functions under the Chhattisgarh government. The code assigned to RTO Durg is CG-07.

The functions of RTO Offices in Durg are three-fold, namely:

• Levying and collection of road taxes
• Issuing of motor vehicle permit
• Development of road transportation
• Implementation of state government traffic rules, and Central Motor Vehicles Act, 1989
• Car inspection 
• Registration of motor vehicles
• Issuing of vehicle fitness certificate
• Levying and collection of motor vehicle taxes
• Issuing of driving licences
• Issuing Pollution Control Certificate (PUC)
• Removal of hypothecation

The different types of driving licences that also imply under Durg RTO:

• Licence for two-wheeler vehicle
• Licence for light gear motor vehicle with 50cc engine capacity and above 
• Licence for motorcycle (mopeds, scooters) with any cc engine capacity
• Licence for a light motor vehicle with non-transportation purposes
• Licence for a light motor vehicle with commercial purposes
• Licence for all India driving permits of trucks and cars
• Licence for heavy goods motor vehicle
• Licence for heavy trailers, for those already possessing a heavy vehicle driving licence

Types of vehicle registration certificates given by Durg RTO are: 

• Duplicate registration, or Hypothecation certificate
• Permanent registration

Durg RTO will provide you with a unique registration number after you have completed the entire vehicle registration process. This unique registration number is the number on your licence plate.

Durg RTO follows the guidelines of Chhattisgarh, so the vehicle registration charges include:

• Registration Charges for a New Vehicle: ₹600 for all cars
• Charges for Smart Card and Number Plate: ₹1000
• Temporary Registration Charges: ₹1200 - ₹1500 per month
• Road Tax Charges: 8% to 9% for a new car registration
• Charges for Hypothecation: ₹1500 for a car bought on a loan

Road taxes in Durg are under the supervision of RTO Chhattisgarh road taxes. They are:

• For 2-Wheeler Vehicles: 4% of the cost of the vehicle 

• For 4-Wheeler Vehicles: 5% - 6% of the cost of the vehicle

• For Commercial Vehicles (taxi): 150 per seat per quarter without an all-India permit

Not following the new traffic fines, effective from 1st September 2019 in Durg will call upon you various penalties, such as:

• Violating General Traffic Guidelines: ₹500 - ₹1000

• Driving a Vehicle Without a Licence: ₹5000 – imprisonment up to 1 month

• Driving in a Drunken State: ₹10000 - ₹15000

• Driving a Vehicle in Poor Condition: ₹1500

• Driving a Vehicle Without Registration: ₹2000 - ₹10000

It is mandatory to have a motor insurance coverage for your vehicle if you are a citizen of Durg. The Durg RTO attaches a high challan amount of ₹2000 - ₹4000 on vehicles for travelling on road without any insurance.

A report was published about a rash collision between a scooter and a car that led to the death of a married couple on 8th January 2023. The couple was on their way from Rajnandgaon, after attending a marriage occasion. While riding they were badly hit by a rashly driven car, which led to them being thrown away from the scooter. The scooter was dragged for nearly 100 metres. 

In another incident, on 11th December 2022, the incomplete construction of the flyover on the Durg-Raipur road led to the killing of a couple and their 12-year-old daughter. The cause of the incident later found out by officials was the absence of barricades and warning signs of stopping on the road, or not going ahead.

On 23rd December 2022, the traffic police of Durg, Chhattisgarh started a road campaign where anyone who is caught breaking any traffic rule, will either pay a fine or collect plastic waste. This has been done to create road awareness among vehicle drivers about road safety and traffic regulations.
