International Travel Insurance Policy Online for your Overseas Travel
International travel insurance is a financial protection against any unforeseen losses or damages that can occur during your foreign trip. It covers your medical emergencies, trip disruptions, loss of baggage or passport, and personal liability abroad. Plus, it provides 24/7 assistance, ensuring global travel is stress-free and financially secure.
What is International Travel Insurance?
International travel insurance, also known as overseas or foreign travel insurance, is a financial coverage designed for tourists, students, business travellers, and anyone planning to travel abroad from India. It provides comprehensive protection against unexpected events like medical emergencies, flight cancellations, lost baggage or passport, and personal liability.
You should purchase it before your journey begins to ensure you're covered from the moment you travel. While it can’t prevent travel hiccups, it helps you manage them confidently with 24/7 assistance and financial support, no matter where in the world you are.
Digit International Travel Insurance offers simple, flexible plans that cover everything from medical emergencies to passport loss, from trip cancellations to even adventure activities, all with easy digital processes. With quick claim support and zero paperwork, it’s built to help you travel smarter, safer, and stress-free.
Is Travel Insurance Mandatory for International Travel?
Yes, travel insurance is mandatory for visiting certain countries from India, such as those in the Schengen zone. While not all countries require it, having international travel insurance is highly recommended; it not only protects you from unexpected situations abroad but can also strengthen your visa application in many cases.
Why Do You Need International Travel Insurance?
Travel comes with surprises—some good, some not-so-great. Travel insurance can turn your trip into a great one. It ensures you stay covered, stress-free, and financially secure. Here’s why it’s a must-have for every trip!
- Offers Reimbursement for Flight Delays- Flight delays are frustrating, but what if you got compensation every time it happened? With travel insurance, you do!
- Gives Compensation for Delayed or Lost Baggage- Baggage losses are horrible, no doubt, but so are baggage delays! If your bags arrive late or are lost, you’ll receive compensation.
- Provides Coverage for Medical Emergencies- Even a minor illness abroad can be shockingly expensive. Your insurance takes care of your hefty medical costs.
- Ensures a Stress-free Road Trip- Travel insurance covers damage to your rental car and even third-party liabilities, so you can enjoy your road trip worry-free.
- Assures Protection from Financial Losses Abroad- Missed flights, trip cancellations, or lost belongings can burn a hole in your wallet. A policy ensures you don’t have to bear these losses alone.
Do I Really Need Travel Insurance?
If that’s a question you’ve been battling with, read on.
What is the Right Time to Buy Travel Insurance?
The best time to buy travel insurance is right after booking your international trip. This approach ensures coverage for the entire duration of your journey, including potential issues that may arise before departure, such as flight delays or cancellations.
Many travellers delay buying insurance thinking they can do it later, but the longer you wait, the more vulnerable you are to losing money or facing complications due to uncovered risks.
Here are some key reasons why early purchase is highly recommended:
- Covers Pre-Trip Disruptions – From flight cancellations and delays to personal emergencies, travel insurance can cover non-refundable expenses even before your trip begins.
- Protects Against Dynamic Risks - As global travel becomes more unpredictable due to weather changes, health advisories, or strikes, early insurance offers a safety net for evolving travel conditions.
- Provides Peace of Mind – Having insurance from the start allows you to plan and prepare for your trip with confidence, knowing you're financially and medically protected.

What's Not Covered in Digit’s Travel Insurance?
While ours is a comprehensive travel insurance that covers most things that could go wrong on vacation, we are completely open in all that we do. Understanding what your travel insurance does not cover is just as critical as knowing what is covered. The following are some exclusions that our travel insurance will not cover:
- We don’t cover pre-existing illnesses or if your doctor advises against travel. Death or disability from an accident won’t be covered after 365 days.
- Single-day adventure activities are covered, but multi-day treks, hikes, or professional-level sports are not.
- Flight delays aren’t covered if informed 6+ hours in advance. Luggage delays due to customs and missed connections with short layovers won’t be covered either.
- Theft claims aren’t valid if reported after your trip is over. You must inform local police within 24 hours.
- No coverage for trip extensions due to childbirth, trip abandonments due to pre-existing health issues, or cancellations due to visa rejection.

Who Should Buy Travel Insurance Policy?
How to Compare Travel Insurance Policies Online?
Finding the right travel insurance is easy when you know what to check! Follow these steps to compare quotes like an expert.
- Check Medical Coverage: Medical costs are highly expensive abroad! Look at the medical benefits and sum insured, a.k.a. the amount of coverage, in your travel insurance plan to ensure you’re well-covered in case of emergencies.
- Assess the Claim Process: A good insurance plan should have a quick and hassle-free claim process. Check how claims are settled, the insurer’s claim ratio, and whether they offer 24/7 support.
- Check Terms & Choose Smartly: Go through the terms of claims to know exactly what’s covered. Once you’ve checked all factors, compare plans side by side and pick one that offers the best coverage, smooth claim support, and clear terms.
How to Calculate Travel Insurance Premium Online?
Getting a travel insurance quote on the Digit app or website is quick and hassle-free! Just follow these 4 simple steps:
- Enter Your Travel Details: Select your destination, travel dates, and the number of travellers.
- Enter Date of Birth: Provide the date of birth of each traveller on the next tab.
- Choose Your Coverage: Pick the sum insured and the plan with suitable features.
- View the Premium: Your premium is auto-calculated based on your selections.
Factors Affecting Travel Insurance Premiums and How to Reduce Them?
An insurance premium is the cost of your insurance. It is the amount you, as a policyholder, must pay in order to be insured. A travel insurance premium is calculated depending on the age, duration, location, number of travellers, and add-ons you choose for your travel insurance plans.
The more covers required, the higher your premium amount will be. At Digit, we offer a premium starting at just Rs. 225 . If you’re looking to lower your premium amount, consider this:
- Choose Covers That are Essential to You: Many policyholders are often oblivious to the covers of their packs and end up paying a much higher amount. To avoid this, you can customise your plan and choose only the essential covers like flight delay or missed connection, baggage/passport loss, medical covers, etc.
- Be an Early Bird: If you purchase your travel insurance plan earlier on, you are not only educated about your trip, but you can also make required changes depending on the future events. Some companies may offer discounts or other benefits to policyholders who purchase their insurance prior.
- Avoid High-Risk Activities: To lower your premium costs, you can avoid undertaking high-risk long duration activities or even travelling to destinations that prove to be high-risk. At Digit, we cover adventure activities such as scuba diving, bungee jumping, and skydiving but only if the duration is 1 day. We do not cover weeklong hikes, or professional adventure sports.
- Number of Travellers: The premium amount also depends on the number of people you are travelling with. If you are going on a solo trip, consider choosing an individual plan. If you are going with a group, then a group plan proves better than single insurance plans for each individual.
- Do Your Research: Buying travel insurance only guarantees your safety during your trip. It is important to choose the right plan, which is flexible enough, has abundant benefits that fit your goals, and compare travel insurance prices across platforms. You can then compare and choose what’s best for you.

- Choose the Right Travel Insurance Cover: One-size-fits-all doesn’t work in travel insurance. You need a region-specific plan that fits your trip and follows local rules. At Digit, we make it easy with clear options, simple terms, and our “Digit Simplifies” section so you always know what you’re buying.
- Know the Exclusions & Coverage Limits: Claims often get rejected because people miss what's not covered. We keep things clear, no hidden terms, and our team is always ready to help you understand exclusions and limits upfront.
- Submit the Right Documents on Time: Late or missing documents are a common reason for claim rejection. Our AI-powered claims process helps sort paperwork instantly, and we tell you exactly what you need for every claim, no confusion, no delays.

Precautions to Remember Before Travelling Abroad
- Avoid taking your passport everywhere. It’s better to leave it in your hotel locker and carry a copy for your ID purposes instead.
- Don’t carry too much cash around. When withdrawing cash from an ATM, always check your surroundings and verify your notes after the transaction.
- Don’t fall for petty travel scams such as fake monks asking for donations, overcharging cab drivers, fake tour guides, etc. To learn more about travel scams in different places and how you can stay safe from such situations, check out our in-house Ouch Potato.
- Always keep your cash in more than one place. For example, you can carry some cash in your wallet, while some of it can safely be kept in the inside pocket of your backpack.
- Remember the location of your accommodation well and always use cabs that go by meter, or else you’re likely to be scammed by them!
