1. New Vehicle Registration

When a new vehicle is purchased for the first time, it is registered, which lasts 15 years from the purchase if the vehicle is owned for personal purposes and 2 years for commercial purposes.

Process:

• Step 1: Individuals are required to submit all the documents at the RTO office
• Step 2: Followed by paying the registration fee and applicable taxes
• Step 3: Undergo a vehicle inspection if necessary
• Step 4: Receive the registration certificate (RC Book) with the registration number.

2. Temporary Registration

Temporary registration is required for the vehicles that are being transported or sold within a specified period. Here’s the list of documents required to complete the process:

Documents Required:

• Temporary Registration Application Form
• Proof of Identity and address of the owner
• Vehicle chassis and engine number
• PUC certificate

Process:

• Step 1: Individuals are required to submit all the documents at the RTO office.
• Step 2: Followed by paying the temporary registration fee.
• Step 3: Then, receive a temporary registration certificate valid for a specified period.

Like every other RTO across India, Lucknow RTO follows the same systematic national numbering scheme for vehicles. The type of number plate issued by the RTO also depends on the type or category of the vehicle.

• Motor Cycle:  ₹60
• MGP / MGV:  ₹400

Road tax is a mandatory fee that every vehicle owner must pay to use roads constructed for the public by the government. In Lucknow, the road tax is collected by the Regional Transport Office (RTO), just like in other parts of India.

For Two-Wheelers

• 2% of the price for vehicles that cost up to ₹20,000
• 4% of the price for the new vehicles that cost between ₹20,000 - ₹60,000
• 6% of the price for the new vehicles that cost between ₹60,001 - ₹2,00,000
• 8% of the price for the new vehicles that costs above ₹2,00,000

For Four-Wheelers

• 3% of the price for vehicles that cost up to ₹6 lakhs
• 6% of the price for the new vehicles that cost between ₹6 lakhs - ₹10 lakhs
• 8% of the price for new vehicles that cost above ₹10 lakhs
• 75% exemption on road tax for electric four-wheelers

Yes, it is mandatory to have motor insurance in Lucknow. Insurance protects you from unforeseen events, provides financial aid, and covers any liability arising from damage caused to a third party in an accident. However, having at least third-party car insurance in Lucknow is compulsory. 

Driving without it can result in fines of ₹2,000 for the first offence and for a second time or subsequent offences of ₹4,000.

While registering a new or pre-owned vehicle in Lucknow RTO, one must submit a series of documents for registration. So, to save you from all the hassles, we’ve listed down all the documents you must submit to get your registration done.

1. Form 20

This is one of the major forms of vehicle registration. It must be filled out and include the chassis and engine number.e owner, and other relevant particulars.

2. Sale Certificate (Form 21)

This form refers to the sale certificate issued by the vehicle dealer.

3. Roadworthiness Certificate Form 22

The manufacturer issues this form to guarantee the vehicle's roadworthiness.

4. Vehicle Insurance Certificate

An attested copy of the vehicle’s insurance copy or cover note.

5. Proof of Address

Any government-registered ID that contains your valid proof of home address where the vehicle needs to be registered.

6. Form 34

This form is required only if the vehicle is under lease or hire purchase and needs to be signed by both the owner and the financer.

7. PUC Certificate

This certificate is needed to analyse if the vehicle meets the required emission standard.

8. Customs Clearance Certificate

Customs clearance certificate is required only if the vehicle is imported.

9. PAN Card

This is required for tax purposes. If you don’t have one, you can submit forms 60 and 61.

10. Dealer/Manufacturer Invoice

An invoice of the purchase provided by the dealer or manufacturer.

11. Passport-sized Photographs

A recent photograph of the individual purchasing the vehicle.

12. One-time Road Tax

This tax must be paid at the time of registration.

13. Registration Fee

Every vehicle owner must pay the registration fee, as specified by the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

In 2024, Lucknow experienced many traffic events due to massive congestion on roads, waterlogging issues, and limited routes. To avoid traffic congestion, e-rickshaws have been banned on 11 key routes to facilitate the easy movement of vehicles during prime time.

1. Pothole Eradication Campaign: Again, CM Yogi Adityanath directed a special campaign to remove all potholes from all state roads by October 10.
2. Road Safety Campaign by Lucknow University: Lucknow University also launched a road safety awareness campaign from October 2, 2024 to October 16, 2024. The main purpose was to get people to be more mindful of traffic rules.
