In short, the engines produce both torque and power every time you turn on your automobile and press on the accelerator. You might think that these two are the same, but they are not.

What is Power?
Power is the rate at which or how rapidly the work gets accomplished. The Scottish inventor James Watt said that one horsepower defines the total amount of power needed to lift approximately 33,000 pounds by precisely one foot in one minute.
Power is a scalar quantity, which means it does not feature the direction of applied forces connected with its measurement. The SI measurement unit of power is kilowatt or KW. The calculation and SI units for power and torque are different and discussed later in this article.
In the context of automobiles, power is commonly measured as horsepower. A vehicle that features higher power will provide higher top speed and better acceleration.
What Is Torque?
Torque refers to the rotating force that the crankshaft of an engine produces. In simpler terms, torque is vehicle engines 'pulling force'. It also helps with a vehicle's initial acceleration.
More torque production in an engine's vehicle increases the engine's ability to do work. Speaking in terms of physics, torque is a vector quantity and is calculated using both direction and magnitude.
Now that you have understood the meaning of torque, you can easily identify vehicles that feature higher torque. For example, heavier vehicles like SUVs feature engines that can produce and deliver a high quantity of torque.
The high torque feature is handy when a vehicle engages in movements on steep inclines. Likewise, it is also beneficial for vehicles transporting heavy goods from one place to the other.
The difference between power and torque calculation is as follows:
- You can calculate torque as - Force x distance.
- As per the SI measurement unit, torque is identified as Newton-meter and is recognized as 'NM'.
- On the other hand, power is calculated as – (Torque x rpm) / 5252.
- RPM stands for rotation per minute, and 5252 is a constant.
