Every vehicle owner must mandatorily pay registration charges to the Pune RTO to get their vehicle registration certificate. Here is a list of the charges:

• Registration Charges: ₹600 for all vehicles
• Temporary Registration Charges: ₹1200 to ₹1500 (temporary registration for up to 1 month)
• Number Plate Charges: ₹230 to ₹400 (It is similar to a high-security number plate)
• Hypothecation Charges: ₹1500 (In case you purchase your car on a loan)
• Parking Fee/State Development Charges: ₹2000 (MCD parking fees for cars under ₹4 lakh)
• MCD Parking Fees for Cars Above ₹4 Lakh (Applicable in Some States): ₹4000 
•  Road Tax Charges:

1.   Cars under ₹10 Lakh: CNG 7%, Petrol 11%, Diesel 13%

2.  Vehicles between ₹10 Lakh to ₹20 Lakh: Petrol 12%, Diesel 14%

3.  Cars above ₹20 Lakh: Petrol 13%, Diesel 15%

*If you purchase the car under a company name, the road tax is above 20%

• FasTag Charges: ₹500 FasTag fees payable on the purchase of a vehicle

Here is a list of the Maharastra road tax, implemented by the state government that are followed by the RTO offices in Pune:

1. For Two-Wheelers (as per engine capacity):

• Till 99cc: 10% of vehicle cost
• Between 99cc and 299cc: 11% of vehicle cost
• Above 299cc: 12% of vehicle cost

2. For Four-wheelers: 

• Petrol-Driven Motor Vehicles: 11% to 13% of vehicle cost
• CNG/LPG-Driven Vehicles: 7% to 9% of vehicle cost
• Diesel Driven Motor Vehicles: 13% to 15% of vehicle cost

Traffic rules in Pune are very strict and there has been a considerable hike in the traffic fines of Pune due to the increase in accidents and unforeseen incidents on road here. Here is a list of the revised traffic fines in Pune:

• Violation of Road Rules: ₹500 – ₹1000
• Driving a Vehicle Using a Mobile Phone: ₹5000
• Riding or Driving Without a Licence: ₹5000/community service
• Speed Violation: Light motor vehicles ₹1000 to ₹2000, Heavy Passenger Vehicles / Medium Passenger Vehicles (MPV) ₹2000 to ₹4000, Seizure of driving licence for a repeated offence

Yes, it is mandatory to have motor insurance, if you want to drive a vehicle in Pune. If you do not have a valid driving licence, you have to pay a fine of ₹2000 and/or imprisonment for 3 months with or without community service. For repeat offences, the fine is ₹4000.

As per recent news, the ongoing metro work in Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk and its surrounding area has led to frequent traffic jams, thus causing much inconvenience to the residents.

In the news police also took action against some vehicles under the Motor Vehicle Act that were privately owned and coming from the BRT in Sangvi Transport Division.

Another news confirmed that the city police suspended the rotary traffic system at the Savitribai Phule Pune University junction. The police officials said that they will consider suggestions from the citizens and study the bottlenecks and relaunch the system.

To allow hassle-free online services Pune RTO has introduced the faceless service process flow. This includes getting a NOC, address change in RC, furnishing secondary or duplicate RC, licence transfer, and renewal of DL.

Citizens of Pune witnessed a Pedestrian’s Day on Gandhi Jayanti last year with a ‘clean air’ theme at eight major junctions across certain areas. They talked about road safety and highlighted how Pune can become an accident-free place.

In addition, the country’s first course on ‘Driving Skills and Road Safety Awareness’ started in Pune last year. This course aims to create ‘road safety awareness’ amongst students and get them involved in studying this.

In March last year a Go Yellow road safety awareness program was conducted by a program coordinator from Safety Research Foundation (SRF). This initiative was to make people aware of the traffic rules, regulations and fines.
