Birsa Munda Airport, also called Ranchi Airport, is located exactly at Hinoo in Ranchi. The airport has been named so to honour the Indian freedom fighter and tribal leader, Birsa Munda whose origin was in Ranchi.
Among others, this is the busiest airport in Jharkhand. It is only 7 km from the city centre, which makes it most convenient for travellers.
Built in 2022, this airport can handle about 200 passengers during peak times on an hourly basis. It is only 12 km from the city centre, which makes it easily accessible to the residents. With a 2,500-metre-long runway, this airport handles airlines like IndiGo. The terminal building can accommodate up to five lakh passengers annually.
Sonari Airport, also known as Jamshedpur Airport, is built on 25 acres of land. Among Jharkhand airports, Sonari is the second-busiest after Ranchi airport. Tata Group inaugurated this airport in 1940, and it is conveniently located 4.4 km from the city centre.
It offers flights to Bhubaneshwar and Kolkata with airlines like IndiaOne Air. The government is planning for a new airport at Dhalbhumgarh, as there is no space for expansion here.
Bokaro Airport is ready to begin its commercial flights in June 2023. It was built in the 1960s when it mainly handled private flights for the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). Its terminal can manage a maximum of 300 passengers during busy hours.
As it is only 4.1 km from the city centre, it has good connectivity. It is currently expecting a major expansion in terms of its runway and overall facilities.
Sido Kanhu Airport, commonly known as Dumka Airport is located in Asansol of Dumka. Its commercial flights are not operational currently. However, the expansion process of the airport is under construction and it will soon start its scheduled commercial services.
At present, only gliders, state government aircraft and private firms use this airport. After its initiation, people from this airport can travel to Ranchi and Kolkata.
Dhalbhumgarh Airport will be the new Jamshedpur International Airport in Jharkhand. The initiation of this project dates back to COVID-19 and is getting continuously delayed.
However, the government is working to clear all papers which are essential to start the project. It is expected that this airport will have the capacity to take more passengers as compared to Ranchi Airport.
