Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana was implemented in 2003 to rectify the regional imbalance in the availability of trustable and affordable tertiary level healthcare services. The nodal ministry for this scheme is the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This yojana also augments facilities to promote quality medical education in this country.

The main objectives of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) are – 

• To amend regional unavailability of affordable and reliable tertiary healthcare services.
• To augment quality medical education facilities in India, especially in the states with inadequate services.

Features of the first phase of PMSSY are –

• Establishing six AIIMS like institutions.
• Modernizing thirteen existing Government medical colleges.

Features of the second phase of PMSSY are – 

• The Government of India gave the nod to set up two more institutes in the line of AIIMS, each in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
• Upgrading six more medical college institutions.

The third phase of PMSSY has the following feature – 

• Upgrading the medical college institutions of Rewa, Jhansi, Gorakhpur, Kozhikode, Darbhanga, Bellary, Muzaffarpur.
