RTO Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is one of the most populated cities of Gujarat, which is currently the administrative headquarters of the Ahmedabad district. The textile and garment industry of the city contributes largely to its economy. There are currently three RTO offices in Ahmedabad, looking after vehicle-related issues.

The RTO offices in Ahmedabad have an important role in ensuring road safety and traffic movement across the city. Here are some of the most important functions that they perform in Ahmedabad. 

• Issuing and renewing a driving licence

You must register your vehicle from the RTO to get a vehicle RC and a number plate once you purchase it. One cannot drive legally without these documents. Here are the two basic types of vehicle registration done in Ahmedabad RTOs.

Tax on Two-wheelers

• Flat 6% on the cost of the vehicle after registration 

• 15% of the lump sum tax paid for vehicles up to 8 years old

• 1% of the lump sum tax paid or ₹100 for vehicles older than eight years (whichever is more)

Tax on Four-wheelers

Flat 6% on the cost of the vehicle for all cars, including the following: 

• Private cars

• LMVs

• Station wagons

• Jeeps

• Tempos 

• Taxis

Tax on Commercial Vehicles

• 2.5% of the cost of the vehicle for auto-rickshaws 

• Flat 6% on the cost of vehicles for six-seater and goods vehicles having GVW of 7500kg

• 3% of the cost of the vehicle for commercial tractors

Like other parts of India, Ahmedabad is also strict when it comes to traffic rules. If you violate these rules, the RTO can impose various penalties. It follows the traffic fines of Gujarat. Here are some of the most common fines that the Ahmedabad RTO charges. 

• Not wearing a helmet or seatbelt: ₹500

• Driving without a proper licence: ₹2000 for two-wheelers and ₹3000 for other vehicles 

• Rash driving: ₹1500 for two-wheelers and three-wheelers, ₹3000 for LMVs and ₹5000 for other vehicles 

• Breaking the speed limits: ₹1500-₹2000 for two-wheelers and three-wheelers, ₹1500-₹2000 for tractors, ₹2000-₹3000 for LMVs and ₹4000 with cancelled licence for six months for other vehicles

• Driving unregistered vehicle: ₹1000 for two-wheelers, ₹2000 for three-wheelers, ₹3000 for LMVs

• Drunken driving: ₹10000 and/or imprisonment for six months (if caught once), ₹15000 and/or imprisonment for two years (for repeat offenders)

Yes, it is mandatory to have motor insurance while driving on the streets of Ahmedabad. According to the Motor Vehicles Act, this has become a mandate for every part of India. The policy should at least provide coverage against third-party damages. Ahmedabad RTO can fine up to ₹2000 if they catch you driving an uninsured car, which increases to ₹4000 in case of repeat offenders.

Ahmedabad, one of Gujarat's central cities, faces major traffic issues. According to a report, one primary reason for the congestion is the varying road widths across the city. While 61% of the roads are single lanes, 12% have two lanes. Another report adds to the view of heavy traffic issues, stating that Ahmadabad has the slowest peak-hour traffic. The average speed of vehicles hardly crosses 22 kmph. 

As per recent data, Ahmedabad traffic authorities have noticed a 14% rise in the number of road accidents as compared to 2021. There were nearly 1,447 cases of road accidents, which killed about 462 citizens. Another report suggests that there has been a rise in the fatality of road accidents, which increases the death rate.

However, the government is making amends to reduce the number of road accidents. According to a report, the in-charge ACS, Manoj Das, has written a departmental order to cities like Ahmedabad to work on the engineering faults that might be causing road accidents. Another report states that the ACP NN Chaudhary is conducting road safety weeks to ensure road awareness.
