RTO Thane

Thane is the part of Mumbai Metropolitan and is the 15th most populous Indian state. Thane is a major tourist spot attracting several tourists here as well. There is one Regional Transport Office in Thane. Moreover, the RTO code of Thane is MH-04 and it performs several vehicular services abiding by the guidelines of the Motor Vehicle Act. 

Additionally, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) along with the traffic department of Thane is responsible for looking after traffic and transportation.

Thane RTO performs the following functions:

• Issues vehicle permits

• Issues International Driving Permit (IDP)

• Transfers ownership of vehicles

• Conducts vehicle fitness tests for issuing fitness certificates for vehicles.

• Issues No Objection Certificates (NOC) for vehicle registration in another state.

• Registration and renewal of the RCs of vehicles

There are three types of driving licences issued by Thane RTO, which includes the following:

• Learner’s Licence
• Permanent Licence
• International Driving Permit
• Commercial Driving Licence

• Temporary Registration

• Permanent Registration

Following are the charges for vehicle registration in Thane:

• Two-wheeler: ₹300 - ₹5000

• Three-wheeler: ₹1000

• Personal vehicle: ₹600 - ₹5000

• Commercial vehicle: ₹1000 - ₹1500

• Temporary Registration: ₹1200 - ₹1500

As per the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, the five offices in Thane are responsible for collecting the road tax in the district. The Thane RTO collects these taxes as per the structure of the Maharashtra road tax, and it varies as per the fuel type of the vehicle. The following are the charges:

• Petrol: ranges between 11% - 13% of the vehicle price

• Diesel: 13% - 15% of the vehicle price

• LPG/CNG: 7% - 9% of the vehicle cost

Following are the Maharashtra traffic fines for disobeying traffic rules in Thane district:

• Riding without a helmet: ₹1000 fine and three months licence disqualification

• Drunk driving: ₹10,000 and/or six months imprisonment

• Not wearing seatbelts: ₹1000

• Overspeeding: ₹1000-₹4000; repeated offence will lead to seizure of licence

• Not giving way to an ambulance and other emergency vehicles: ₹10,000 and 6 months imprisonment.

• Driving without valid RC: First time - ₹5000, and ₹10,000 for a second-time offence

Yes, as per government guidelines, it is mandatory to have motor insurance in Thane. You may or may not have first-party insurance, but third-party insurance is mandatory. If you drive without insurance, the penalty will range between ₹2000 - ₹4000. 

As a satellite city of Mumbai, Thane accommodates a substantial amount of traffic every day. Recently, the CM of Maharashtra inaugurated four new lanes on the Kopri Bridge. The added lanes on the bridge will reduce travel time for people who commute between Mumbai and Thane. 

The PWD department of Thane has taken the decision to speed up traffic movement on the Ghodbunder road. As per reports, the Public Works Department intends to reduce the gradient on Ghodbunder road. The sloping is responsible for slowing traffic in the area. Hence, a decision is taken to level the road.  

In an effort to further reduce traffic congestion on the Mumbai-Thane route, MMRDA plans to construct a pair of U-shaped flyovers at the Teen Haath Naka. This project will ensure a signal-free corridor on the location. Teen Haath Naka is infamous for extended traffic congestion. According to MMRDA, the pair of flyovers will ensure an uninterrupted flow of traffic in the area.

Traffic Police of Thane organise regular road safety campaigns to create awareness among the public about correct traffic behaviour. In a recent campaign, Maharashtra police created awareness about the emergency helpline number. The police commissioner noted that the service has been available since April 2021. Yet very few people are aware of the 112 emergency helpline number. The helpline number offers immediate emergency services.
