How to Apply for a Driving Licence in Nagaland in 2026?

Nagaland, located in the North Eastern region of India has emerged to be an agricultural and industrial hub of the area. Unlike a permanent licence, candidates must be above 20 to be eligible for a commercial driving licence. Moreover, a candidate must qualify for the 8th standard and have a minimum driving experience of 1 year.

4. International Vehicle Permit

An international driving license allows individuals to drive in a foreign country. Candidates must hold a permanent driving licence before applying for an International Driving Permit. This permit remains valid for a year; candidates must apply for it again after it expires.

• Step 2: Under this tab, choose ‘Driving Licence Related Services’. On the next page, choose ‘Nagaland’ from the displayed list.

Besides opting for an online application, you can also apply for a driving licence offline. Here are the steps to do so:

• Step 1: Visit the nearest RTO (Regional Transport Office) and collect an application form. You can also download the form from the official website. Collect printed copies and submit the same to the RTO.

Vehicle owners have to undergo a driving licence test to acquire a driving licence according to the rules of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988. Driving Test For Two and Three-Wheeler Vehicles

The motor vehicle will inspect your riding skills and whether you can control the vehicle or not. If he or she is satisfied with your performance, you will be asked to ride the vehicle on the main road.

Driving Test For Four-Wheelers

In a driving licence test for four-wheelers, you must drive the vehicle along the 'H' shaped track. Even in a four-wheeler driving test, the motor vehicle inspector will assess your driving skills and how comfortably you can drive. Once the invigilator is content with your skills, you will drive on the main road.  Upon successful completion, you will receive a driving licence.

If you do not pass the exam, you have the option to reappear for the test after seven days.

To apply for an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Nagaland, the applicant needs to visit the RTO. Even though there is no such test for obtaining an IDP, having a permanent driving license is enough for it.

Following are the simple steps to avail an International Driving Permit: 

• Step 1: Go to the official portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) or Nagaland Transport Department, where online IDP issuance services are provided. 
• Step 2: Enter the permanent number of your vehicle’s driving licence 
• Step 3: Input your date of birth in the right format, i.e., DD/MM/YYYY.
• Step 4: Once your driving license is displayed, click on ‘Next’ to proceed.
• Step 5: Insert the additional information and select ‘Apply’.
• Step 6: Fill out the application form correctly and keep a hard copy of the same for future reference. 
• Step 7: Submit the necessary documents.

Driving licences are also subject to renewal after the validity period. For a non-commercial vehicle, the validity period of this official document is 20 years or till the vehicle owner attains 50 years of age, whichever comes earlier. However, the scenario is different for commercial vehicles. A driving licence for commercial vehicles is valid for three years.

Online Process for Driving Licence Renewal in Nagaland

• Step 3: Now from the list of states, choose ‘Nagaland’.
• Step 4: On getting redirected to the next page, click on ‘Apply for Driving Licence Renewal’.
• Step 5: Go through the instructions and click on ‘Continue’.

• Step 7: Attach driving licence renewal-related documents. Put your digital signature and passport-size photos.

Choose the preferred gateway and complete the payment procedure. After the successful completion of the payment, you will receive an application ID. In addition, you will receive all the details related to the renewal application form on your contact number via SMS.

Offline Process for Driving Licence Renewal in Nagaland

• Step 1: Visit the local Regional Transport Office (RTO) in person and collect the driving licence renewal form.
• Step 2: Provide the necessary details to fill out Form 2 and submit it with other necessary documents like an expired driving licence, Form 1 (medical fitness declaration for non-transport vehicles), Form 1A (physical fitness declaration for transport vehicles) etc.

If you are renewing your driving licence in another state, you have to provide the No Objection Certificate (NOC).

• Step 3: Provide the passport-size photograph and mention other relevant details linked to your driving licence.
• Step 4: Initiate payment for the standard fee and confirm a slot for the driving test.
• Step 5: Attend the driving licence test and submit the medical certificate to get the driving licence.
