    How to Apply for a Driving Licence in Nagaland?

    Nagaland, located in the North Eastern region of India has emerged to be an agricultural and industrial hub of the area. The major reason behind the development of these sectors can be attributed to the robust road networks. However, to be legally compliant every vehicle owner in Nagaland must possess a driving licence. It is a mandate as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988.

    It will facilitate seamless transportation and ensure that vehicle owners maintain road and traffic rules. Also, to make sure every individual adheres to it there is a dedicated Road Transport Department. It is entrusted with procedures like issuing a driving licence in Nagaland, registering vehicles, etc.

    Types of Driving Licences Issued in Nagaland

    Driving licences in India can be broadly categorised into four major types:

    1. Permanent Licence: Permanent licences are extended to those vehicle owners who have attained the minimum age requirement of 18 years and have passed the driving test. However, only after receiving the learner's licence, can you apply for a permanent one at the nearest Regional Transport Office. It can be at any time after 30 days from the issuance date of the learner’s licence but before 180 days have passed. The permanent licence is applicable for private vehicles (like bikes, cars etc.)

    2. Learner’s Licence: A learner's licence is the first official document or legal authorisation that allows vehicle owners to drive a motorised vehicle on public roads. However, this document is valid for a period of six months. During this period you have to apply for the permanent one. Also, you will only be able to drive on main roads if a permanent driving licence holder is accompanying you.

    3. Commercial Licence: As the name suggests, a commercial driving licence is extended to those who drive heavy commercial vehicles. Such vehicles can be used for commuting either people or goods. The minimum requirement of a commercial driving licence is that the driver must have completed and passed the eighth grade. There is a different set of rules set that vehicle owners must abide by while applying for a commercial driving licence. It will help vehicle owners ensure the safety of passengers.

    4. International Driving Licence: If you wish to drive outside India you must apply for an international driving licence. This document is valid for 1 year and is recognised all around the globe. Even for getting an international driving licence, you must have a permanent driving licence.

    Eligibility Criteria to Apply for Driving Licence in Nagaland

    It is important for vehicle owners to be acquainted with the following NL driving licence eligibility criteria to get approved in the first instance:

    • Most importantly, applicants must know all the intricacies of traffic rules and regulations.
    • Applicant’s age must be at least 18 years to qualify for a driving licence for driving motorcycles with engine capacity above 50 ccs.
    • For obtaining a driving licence for motorcycles which has engine capacity below 50 ccs, driving licence applicants must be at least 16 years old.
    • The minimum age limit is set at 20 years for applicants willing to obtain a driving licence for a heavy transport vehicle.

    Alternative 1

    Step 1: Go to the official website of the Transport Department of Nagaland.

    Step 2: Download a driving licence application form from its ‘Download’ tab.

    Step 3: Take a print of the form, and fill it out with the necessary details. Submit the form to the RTO along with the necessary documents.

    Step 4: Confirm the date and time of your driving test.

    Pass the test to get the learner's licence initially and then after the predetermined time, apply for the permanent driving licence.

    Alternative 2

    You can also conduct the entire online driving licence application process from the Parivahan website. Follow the mentioned steps to do so:

    Step 1: Once you land on the website and click on ‘Online Services’.

    Step 2: Under this tab, choose ‘Driving Licence Related Services’. On the next page, choose ‘Nagaland’ from the displayed list.

    Step 3: Now click on ‘Apply for Learners Licence’. Go through the instructions carefully. Scroll down and click on ‘Continue’.

    Step 4: Now select from the different categories (diplomats, foreigners, General etc.) for which you are applying for a driving licence and select the 'Applicant does not hold any Driving/Learner licence issued in India' option if you are applying for the very first time. Now click on 'Submit'.

    Step 5: Get redirected to the driving licence application form. Fill it out with the necessary information. Ensure to read and fill out the self-declaration form. At last, attach the necessary documents.

    Step 6: Upload a photo and book a slot for undertaking a driving licence test.

    Visit the mentioned place to take the driving test. On passing the test, you will get the learner’s licence.

    For applying for the permanent licence, you can directly click on the ‘Apply for Driving Licence’ option that will come under ‘Driving Licence Related Services’. Now you have to enter the learner licence number and other details as asked by the site. 

    How to Apply for a Driving Licence in Nagaland Offline?

    Besides opting for an online application, you can also apply for a driving licence offline. Here are the steps to do so:

    Step 1: Visit the nearest RTO (Regional Transport Office) and collect an application form. You can also download the form from the official website. Collect printed copies and submit the same to the RTO.

    Step 2: Fill out the form by providing necessary details like

    • Full name
    • Guardian name
    • Educational degrees
    • Date and place of birth
    • Blood group
    • Residential address etc.

    Step 3: Submit necessary age and address proof along with a passport-size photo.

    Step 4: Now communicate with the concerned authority and book an appointment for the driving test.

    Step 5: You will get a learner's licence only after passing the test. Also, remember, to get a permanent driving licence, you must apply within 180 days counted from the day you received your learner's licence.

    Step 3: Choose the name of the state- 'Nagaland' in this case and click ‘Application Status’.

    Step 4: Enter the application number, birth date and captcha code.

    Step 5: Finally, select 'Submit' to see the application status of your driving licence.

    How to Apply for a Duplicate Driving Licence in Nagaland?

    You can apply for a duplicate driving licence in case your driving licence in Nagaland has been damaged, lost or stolen. Even when the driving licence is entirely written up, defaced or torn, you can apply for this process. However, in case your driving licence is stolen, you have to submit an FIR.

    Here are the steps that will help you to apply for a duplicate driving licence in Nagaland via online and offline methods.

    • Online Method

    Step 1: Go to the Parivahan website and choose ‘Online Services’.

    Step 2: Mention your state name and choose 'Driving Licence Related Services' from 'Online Services'.

    Step 3: On getting redirected to the next page, click ‘Apply for Duplicate Driving Licence’. Go through the instructions and choose ‘Continue’.

    Step 4: Mention date of birth, licence number, and captcha code and then click on ‘Get Driving Licence details’.

    Step 5: Choose an RTO from Nagaland and select ‘Proceed’.

    Step 6: Authenticate licence details and provide your mobile number and Aadhaar details. Click on ‘Continue’.

    Step 7: Now choose ‘Issue of duplicate driving licence’ and then proceed.

    Step 8: On the next page, mention the reason why you are opting for a duplicate driving licence and choose 'Confirm'.

    Step 9: Click on ‘Submit’ and get redirected to the acknowledgement slip.

    Once you initiate the necessary payment, your application for a duplicate driving licence will be forwarded to the Regional Transport Office. You can also download the application form from the Nagaland transport department site. Submit the form with the necessary documents at the Regional Transport Office. After the documents are verified, you will get a duplicate driving licence.

    • Offline Method

    Step 1: Collect the application form from your nearest Regional Transport Office.

    Step 2: Fill out the form and submit it to the RTO. Ensure to provide relevant documents.

    Step 3: Concerned authority will verify all documents and issue a duplicate driving licence after doing so.

    How to Renew a Driving Licence in Nagaland?

    Driving licences are also subject to renewal after the validity period. For a non-commercial vehicle, the validity period of this official document is for 20 years or till the vehicle owner attains 50 years of age, whichever comes earlier. However, the scenario is different for commercial vehicles. A driving licence for commercial vehicles is valid for three years.

    You can follow both online and offline methods to renew a driving licence in Nagaland.

    • Online Method

    Step 1: Go to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway official website and head to the tab ‘Online Services’.

    Step 2: Under ‘Online Services’, choose ‘Driving Licence Related Services’.

    Step 3: Now from the list of states, choose ‘Nagaland’.

    Step 4: On getting redirected to the next page, click on ‘Apply for Driving Licence Renewal’.

    Step 5: Go through the instructions and click on ‘Continue’.

    Step 6: Mention the driving licence number, date of birth and captcha code. (The formats which you must follow to enter this driving licence number are provided below it.)

    Step 7: Attach driving licence renewal-related documents. Put your digital signature and passport-size photos.

    Choose the preferred gateway and complete the payment procedure. After the successful completion of the payment, you will receive an application ID. In addition, you will receive all the details related to the renewal application form on your contact number via SMS.

    • Offline Method

    Step 1: Visit the local Regional Transport Office (RTO) in person and collect the driving licence renewal form.

    Step 2: Provide the necessary details to fill out Form 2 and submit it with other necessary documents like an expired driving licence, Form 1 (medical fitness declaration for non-transport vehicles), Form 1A (physical fitness declaration for transport vehicles) etc.

    If you are renewing your driving licence in another state, you have to provide the No Objection Certificate (NOC).

    Step 3: Provide the passport-size photograph and mention other relevant details linked to your driving licence.

    Step 4: Initiate payment for the standard fee and confirm a slot for the driving test.

    Step 5: Attend the driving licence test and submit the medical certificate to get the driving licence.

    What Is the Procedure to Acquire a Smart Driving Licence in Nagaland?

    Vehicle owners now have the convenience of using a smart driving licence in Nagaland.

    ●       Online Method

    Step 1: Go to the official website of Sarthi Parivahan and choose ‘Driving Licence Related Service’ under 'Online Services'.

    Step 2: From the list of states, choose Nagaland.

    Step 3: Only if you already have the learner’s licence, select ‘Apply Online' and from the drop-down menu that will appear, choose ‘New Driving licence’. (If you do not have the learner’s licence, obtain it first by following the above-mentioned steps.

    Step 4: Mention the necessary details. Upload relevant documents.

    Step 5: Put your signature and book a driving test slot.

    Step 6: Pay the fee and submit biometric details as well.

    Step 7: Attend the driving licence test on the specified date and time.

    The SCDL (Smart Card Driving Licence) will be delivered to you via post.

    ●       Offline Method

    Step 1: Go to the nearest RTO and collect a smart card driving licence form.

    Step 2: Mention the necessary details to fill out the form and submit it along with the required documents. Make sure to provide your biometric details.

    Step 3: Initiate payment for the applicable fees and confirm a slot for taking the driving licence test.

    Obtain the payment receipt. Once you pass the driving test, you will get your smart card driving licence at your registered address.

    ●       Convert Old Driving Licence to Smart Driving Licence

    Your traditional driving licence can be easily converted into a smart card driving licence. Follow the steps below to do so and reap the manifold benefits of it.            

    Step 1: Go to your nearest RTO office and get the smart card driving licence form or licence upgrade form.

    Step 2: Make sure to carry your old driving licence. Fill out the form and clear the driving licence renewal fee.

    Ensure to collect the payment receipt. You can use it till you receive the smart card driving licence.

    What Is the Procedure to Acquire an International Driving Licence in Nagaland?

    If you wish to drive a motor vehicle outside India, you can opt for an international driving licence in Nagaland.  However, it is important to note that the international driving licence has a validity period of 1 year. The transport commissioner's office in Kohima issued this official document.

    Here are the steps that you must follow to obtain an international driving licence in Nagaland:

    Step 1: Visit the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

    Step 2: Navigate to ‘Online Services’ and choose ‘Driving Licence Related Service’.

    Step 3: Choose ‘Apply for International Driving Permit (IDP)’ and read the instructions mindfully. Click on ‘Continue’ and proceed.

    Step 4: Mention the driving licence number, date of birth and captcha code. Now click on ‘Proceed’.

    Step 5: Fill out the additional requirements and click on ‘Apply’.

    Step 6: You will receive an application number in this step. Fill out the two forms: Form 4A and Form 1A.

    Step 7: Enter all the details of your driving licence, provide residential and identity proof and attach the necessary documents. Next, make the required payment

    Step 8: Book a driving test and attend it.

    You can also reach out to the nearest RTO and collect the forms. Initiate payment and submit documents. After the document verification process, you will get an International driving licence.

    What Is the Driving Test Procedure in Nagaland Like?

Once the invigilator is content with your skills, you will be then driving on the main road.  Upon successful completion, you will receive a driving licence.

    In case you do not pass the exam, you have the option to reappear for the test after seven days.
