How to Apply for a Driving Licence in Madhya Pradesh in 2026?

It includes issuing and renewing a driving licence, carrying registrations, providing permits, etc.

The Motor Vehicle Act of 1988 has made it mandatory for all vehicle owners to hold a valid driving licence to drive on Indian streets legally.

Below are the types of driving licences Madhya Pradesh RTO issues:

1. Learner’s Licence

A learner’s licence is provided when a candidate is still learning to drive a vehicle. This licence is valid for up to 6 months. In 6 months, if the candidate is still not ready, they must apply for their learner’s licence again. However, while holding a learner’s licence, drivers must be accompanied by another experienced driver.

2. Permanent Licence

After 6 months, the permanent licence is issued. However, there are certain conditions. Candidates must be above 18 years of age and must have cleared the driving test to obtain a permanent driving licence. This licence is valid for 20 years or until the licence holder turns 50. When licence holders turn 50, they must renew their driving licence, irrespective of the issue date.

3. Commercial Licence

A commercial driving licence is issued to those who drive commercial or transport vehicles like buses, cabs, or goods-carrying vehicles. Unlike a permanent licence, candidates must be above 20 to be eligible for a commercial driving licence. Moreover, a candidate must qualify for the 8th standard and have a minimum driving experience of 1 year.

4. International Vehicle Permit

An international driving license allows individuals to drive in a foreign country. Candidates must hold a permanent driving licence before applying for an International Driving Permit. This permit remains valid for a year; candidates must apply for it again after it expires.

The transport department has introduced laws regarding traffic behaviour on the streets of Madhya Pradesh, which concerns traffic regulations. Among others, this department enforces a minimum eligibility criteria for driving licence application:

• Step 3: It will redirect you to a separate page. Click on the 'Apply for Driving Licence' option from several other options.

• Step 4: As you land on a new page, you will see a driving licence application form. Enter your learner’s licence number and download this application form to print it.

To apply for a driving licence in Madhya Pradesh offline, you must follow the below steps:

• Step 1: Visit your nearest RTO office and collect an application form for a driving licence.

In addition, you can download the application form from the official website of the transport department.

• Step 2: Duly fill in your driving licence application form with all the details as required.
• Step 3: Attach the age, address proof, and passport-size photographs with the application form.
• Step 4: Book a slot to undergo the driving test. Here, officials will test your knowledge of traffic symbols and rules.
• Step 5: Once you pass the driving test, receive a learner’s licence.

A motor vehicle inspector who assesses the applicant is important for conducting a driving test in Madhya Pradesh. For this test, the applicant needs to own the same class of vehicle that he or she has applied for a driving license,  and if they do not have a vehicle of their own, then the motor vehicle school provides it for the exam.

Test for Two-Wheeler & Three-Wheeler

The applicant must drive along an imaginary border of ‘8’, remembering that the vehicle should never stall. After this, the inspector assesses the applicant’s driving performance before he is permitted to ride on public roads.

Test for Four-Wheeler

For four-wheelers, the applicant must take the test on a differently designed road and ensure not to touch the columns. The applicant is disqualified if the columns get touched even by a bit. After this, the applicant is made to drive on a public road, and based on this performance, the applicant will pass or fail. 

If any applicant fails the test for a driving license, he can retake and apply to undergo the test after 7 days. Applying for a retest incurs a small fee.

Online Method

• Step 1: Visit the official website of the Madhya Pradesh Transport Department and choose the 'Online Services' section.

• Step 2: Choose 'Driving Licence' from its drop-down list. You will find a list of driving licence services on the redirected Sarathi Parivahan page. Select 'Apply for Driving Licence'.

• Step 3: Select the name of your state (in this case Madhya Pradesh) and ‘RTO.’

• Step 4: Select the appropriate state and select ‘Apply for International Driving Permit’. Now, download and fill out the following forms - Form 4A and Form 1A.

Offline Method

• Step 1: Visit your nearest RTO office in Madhya Pradesh and collect an application form for an international driving permit.
• Step 2: Fill required details in the application form and specify the countries you want to visit along with your tenure of stay. Attach the necessary documents with it while submitting it to the RTO officials.
• Step 3: Pay the fees, and you will receive your driving licence at your registered address.

Online Process for Driving Licence Renewal in Madhya Pradesh

• Step 1: Visit the official website of the Madhya Pradesh Transport Department and choose the 'Online Services' section.

• Step 2: Choose 'Driving Licence' from its drop-down list, and you will find a list of driving licence services (as it redirects you to the Sarathi Parivahan page). Select 'Apply for Driving Licence Renewal'.

Offline Process for Driving Licence Renewal in Madhya Pradesh

• Step 1: Visit your local RTO in Madhya Pradesh.
• Step 2: Submit all the documents and NOC for the vehicle if you apply for your driving licence renewal from another state.
• Step 3: Provide your driving licence details along with a passport-size photograph.
• Step 4: Complete the payment process. Book a slot for a driving test which is mandatory to get a driving licence.
• Step 5: Undergo the exam and get your driving licence after successfully passing it.

However, if you fail to renew a driving licence even after 5 years from the expiry date, you must apply for a new driving licence. It is because the previous driving licence will lose its validity, and driving with an invalid licence is an offence.
