Ranchi, the capital and the largest city of the state of Jharkhand is a popular educational hub for students of eastern India. Educational institutes such as BIT Mesra, NIFFT, CIP, NUSRL, IIM, RIMS and IIIT have campuses in the city. The massive influx of students during exam seasons becomes a major problem for this city traffic police. So, to ensure regulation and smooth flow of traffic the Transport Department of Ranchi introduced new traffic fines in Ranchi. Continue reading to know everything about it all.

The Jharkhand Government charges the above-mentioned traffic fines in Ranchi based on the Amended Motor Vehicles Act of 2019. The government amended the act to reduce the number of traffic accidents and violations in the country.

On 1st September 2019, the Ranchi Transport Department implemented the act. Since then, the rates of most fines have increased. Especially, serious offences such as driving/riding without a licence and overloading two-wheelers have seen an increase in their rates.

Have Traffic Fines Been Reduced in Ranchi?

Initially, the Jharkhand Government opposed the implementation of the newly revised act. After careful consideration, the act has been implemented since 1st September 2019. Authorities and experts are considering this move as a step in the right direction.

After the implementation of the Revised Motor Vehicles Act of 2019, the rates of Ranchi traffic fines have increased. Earlier the fine for driving a vehicle without a valid license was ₹500, whereas the fine for the same violation now is ₹5000. The main purpose of implementing such high traffic fines in Ranchi is to reduce the number of traffic accidents. People will not violate traffic rules if they are subjected to higher traffic fines.

• Following traffic signals and signs while driving is very important. Violating red lights not only attracts huge fines but can also lead to road accidents.
• Wearing seat belts while driving a vehicle is mandatory.
• Carrying multiple pillions while riding a bike is considered overloading the vehicle. Do not carry more than one pillion on your bike.
• Carrying all the vehicle-related documents such as registration, insurance, driving licence and permits is necessary while driving your vehicle. 
• Using mobile phones while driving can lead to accidents and traffic fines in Ranchi.
• Driving a vehicle under influence of alcohol or other intoxicants is a punishable offence and can lead to violent accidents.
